who can we have as our witnesses?

lilsparkle, 29 of August of 2010 at 10:18 Posted on Planning 0 21

Can we have 2 women or should it be a woman or a man?

I have 2 older sisters who are also my godparents and I thought it might be nice if they were our witnesses seen as i haven't asked them to be bridesmaids.

Who have you chosen to be your witnesses?

You can have anyone you like as long as they're over 18 and have seen all of the ceremony. We're having our bestman and his wife who are great friends of ours but as I didn't have any adult bridesmaids (I coudn't chose between all of my friends and we couldn't afford them all) so we asked her to be a witness instead

You can have whoever you want.

Because we are having a small wedding now and couldn't afford BM dresses etc we chose my best friend and my OH sister as they had originally been asked to be our BM's when our wedding was going to be next year.

The registrar was totally fine with our choice.

I think your sister's will be thrilled you are involving them in the ceremony.

Legally you only require two so I would imagine there is only enough space on the marriage certificate for two signatures.

There was only space for 2 people on our certificate although if you discuss this beforehand maybe it can be altered to 3???? I don't know

I was told I could have more than 2, so I hope I really can as I've already asked 3! On the paperwork there's space for 2 names but I'll discuss it at our meeting.

Thanks guys, I just orginally thought we would have to have best man and chief bridesmaid do it but now I know we have some more options I may have a rethink. It's hard to find everyone something to do to make them feel involved isn't it!

In Turkey the rules are no immediate family members. So we're having a name raffle of all our guests!

I should just add because it may apply to someone else.

You cannot have a witness who doesn't speak fluent English.

Sorry and again I should add. Its not a problem if they are a national of another country.

Just that they must speak fluent English.

We're having my sis (CBM) and his bro (BM). I think it would be lovely to have your 2 sisters, esp that they are not BMs for you. My cousin had his older brother as a witness for his wedding, as his BM (a younger bro) was under 18.

It is kinda traditional mind you for 1 witness to be from each side of the family, but theres no reason why you have to do that!! As long as you and your OH are both happy with the choice!

Well we chose my best friend to be my chief bridesmaid and then we chose OH's sister to be our other bridesmaid so if I do have my sisters as witnesses then we do have people from both sides of the families contributing so hopefully that will keep everyone happy!

I have asked one of my sisters so far If she would like to do it and she said she will so long as she doesn't have to get up and speak in front of everyone! As far as I'm aware she just has to sign not speak am I right?!

    Thanks Gem,

I called my registrar and spoke to them I think the legal requirement is that you have to have to but I wanted my son and because he was under 18 i had to have 2 adults
