Who do i invite where?!

Amanda, 30 November, 2022 at 15:28 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 1
I am getting married abroad and want to have something pretty small (30-40 ppl) . I live abroad from my family so planning to go home this summer for a bridal shower and the guest list has popped up as an issue - here and in other areas.

I want to celebrate this with as many people as possible and asking people from home to travel abroad can be expensive so I hoped celebrating with them at an engagement party or bridal shower would be nice, but I have been told I can’t invite them if they are not invited to the wedding?
We are limited to space with 14 bedrooms at the Villa the wedding will be hosted at and don’t really want to deal too much with lots of people off property.
It it inappropriate to invite people to an engagement party or bridal shower if we don’t have capacity at the destination wedding?

I don't think it is inappropriate if you are staging it as an engagement party as there is no expectation to be part of the wedding, whereas a bridal shower indicates the attendees would be part of the wedding day. Personally, rather than a pre wedding party i would organize something at home for after the wedding. a lot of people do it that way, have the wedding at the destination with the people you can have attend and then hire a hall and DJ, food etc to have a wedding party when you get back, this way people feel included. If you plan to do it next year and you are not getting married for another year it may seem a bit early, hence why it would probably better to do it after you are actually married.
