Who has a heat storage range: Aga, Rayburn, Esse, Redfyre etc?

Popcorn1, 30 August, 2008 at 13:49 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0

I'm planning my new kitchen and as I posted yesterday, was planning to get a range style cooker, albeit exact model not decided. Having done more research, I'm wondering whether I'd be as well going or a traditional heat storage range (cooking only model rather than heating/water and almost certainly gas as opposed to any other fuel). I haven't grown up with one, and appreciate one needs to get used to a different style of cooking, but those that have them do seem to rave about them.

Does anyone have any thoughts or comments? I'd be particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has one other than an Aga as there's not very much on the web about them other than the manufacturers' websites.

Many thanks.

We have a stanley, a rayburn, a range which heats our house, hot water, and obv used for cooking. it's oil fired which means we fill up our tank a couple of times a year. it's certainly a different style of cooking but i'd choose one over an aga because:

you can turn it on and off very easily.

you don't have the challenge of having an aga on all summer- boiling kitchen or turning it off and having to find an alternative cooking method.

we use less oil than an aga because of this.

you can set the temp in the ovens giving you a hot (at set temp) and a warming oven below.

we also cook using a steamer, or the george or in winter on top of the wood burner we have in one of the bedrooms.

obviously it heats our water and house saving money on the electricity, though we can heat it without the range.

cons: yearly servicing costs, cost of oil, cost of range to start with. (think agas are 10-15k and can involve floor being reinforced as they are VERY heavy.) possibly con around say cooking stirfries as whole range needs to be on to heat the top plates.
