Who uses a handkerchiefs?

*Mini*, 14 January, 2013 at 19:37 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 22

Inspired by the post on WP where a B2B wanted to buy her mum a beautifully embroidered handkerchief, do people use them still?

I see them in sale every year at xmas in M&S etc, who receives them?

I once went out with a boy, very gorgeous and trendy he was. I was quite alarmed to see he used proper cotton hankies when blowing his nose- was this justified?

I just dont get them. Why would I carry snot around with me?

C's Dad uses them, as did his Dad and Grandad. When we were together, he tried getting C to carry one with him to. 4 yr old C had none of it, and chose tissues to "chuck the germs away".

    They're gross.

I find them kind of disgusting, yet I'm the girl who always walks around with a tissue up my sleeve, until it is all snotted out.

Although I buy them for my Grandpa. Clearly a generational thing.

Haven't been over to WP yet so not seen that post but I've bought embroidered hankies for my mum and dad.

I agree its a generational thing though, I always used to be issued with a hanky as a child but tend to use tissues nowadays though.

I presume the bride imagined her mother dabbing a tear away with the hankie in a romantic lady like way rather filling it with snot?!?

Yep it's not very hygienic - unfortunately Ive always got a runny nose due to allergies, I use tissues or kitchen roll is more substantial when it's really bad (eww!) Funny story, when i moved into uni student flat I moved in when the other occupants who i hadnt met were out. I went to bed, they came home, and the next morning I went to say hello. They were shocked I was a girl- they had said to each other 'that guy has a really bad cold'!!!!!

I know only 1 person who uses these and he isn't an old guy. It baffles me. I have NO idea why you would want to blow your nose and stick it in your pocket and carry it around all day.

Now, I've been known to stick a used tissue up my sleeve when it has room for another little bit of snot but after that it gets thrown away.

Also, do these handkerchiefs just get put in the washing machine.to be cleaned??? Not sure I like the thought of that either along with clothes. I might be looking into this a bit deeper than require!!!

My Grandad uses them, I think it's a generational thing.

    What about washing them, grim.

My Dad, brother & Mr GB all use handkerchiefs. My Grandma did too.

They go in the washer like everything else. Don't see much difference in washing them as opposed to knickers, or muddy pants?

I have recently been out and bought some. Not for snot purposes ?.

As mentioned a few months ago I have been diagnosed with an eye problem which often causes them to run a lot. I find handherchiefs better than tissues as they seem irritate them more. (still use tissues for my hooter)

Are there many 'emergency' situations that require a tissue?!

My FIL uses one and can't believe his sons don't.

It makes me gag when I see him wipe his granddaughter's nose with it when he's probably wiped his own on it only 5 minutes previously!

I bought both my parents hankies for the wedding, but was fully expecting them to stay in their boxes as a keepsake!

That's what sleeves are for, surely?!

Hankies are grim. Much better to have a tissue that you can dispose of.

My dad always has a hanky, i think this was passed on from my Nan and Gramps who used them too.

But also the crusty bogeys before crustyness may have stuck to the inside of trouser pockets and became crusty ??

My Dad uses one but not for snot purposes, only tends to be for a sniffle or cleaning his glasses. He is never without one.

With regards to the washing, as GB says, don't see it as any worse than washing underwear

I'm glad that my Dad used to use hankies. He had a load of them with his initial embroidered on, and I have one in my memory box that I carried on my wedding day ?
