Interesting question. A quick google says to stop the pie from drying out. anyway, not vile - I quite like it!

It has to be in there if you want to be in the Melton Mobray Club (or whatever it's called).

It stops the pie drying out - and nothing to do with being called "Melton Mowbray pork pies", those have to be made within certain radius of the town (jelly or not!). Makes them look like cat food, but hey ho, some people must like it!

yummy, is it wrong to like the crust and jelly more than the meat?

Now I fancy a pork and pickle pie lol!

I'm with you on that one Sunset. I only eat the pastry and jelly, I give the meat to the pups.

Having eaten one every day for about two years for 'elevenses' I now refuse to touch them except for the really small ones you get in Tesco.

I'm with you, i love the jelly and pastry and could quite happily just eat those bits of the pork pie. In fact i pull them apart when i eat them and save the jelly and pastry to last as they're the best bits.

Because it's cheap, and pork pies are sold by weight.

long ago, i used to work at pork farms in Nottingham during the holidays. the jelly is injected with a special gun (actually a highly sought-after student job....)

Mmmm sounds scrummy. I wish I could find pork pies with the jelly in. All the ones I buy seem to have hardly any in. Years ago there used o be loads. Where has all the jelly gone?
