Will you wear a garter?

Gracef, 3 May, 2022 at 08:47 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 10
So I know it’s tradition for brides to wear a garter. When I googled the reason why, ‘for removal by the groom by teeth’ 😳. I could think of nothing worse personally haha although I hate any kind of attention and actually half dread walking down the aisle with everyone looking at me!

I’m not - I think it’s more of an American thing but regardless, it isn’t us so it’s a tradition we are happy to skip! I also can’t recall ever seeing it done at any of the weddings I’ve been to in the past!

Being present a bridal prep I can say that in my experience 70% will actually have a garter. But never have I seen it pulled off by the grooms teeth at any time during the day.

Occasionally instigated by the brides friends - usually the hen night lot the leg is hoiked up to expose a garter for what they think is a fun shot.

It is not one of those American things that has made its way here as it has been a thing here for many years.

Once walking back from a location in a venue for a shot we have come across it laying on the floor after it has fallen off without the bride even knowing.

And I don't think that many brides actually buy one as it seems to usually come from "Mum brought it for me"

The thing is the creepy teeth thing never has been and is not now a tradition either.

I do not know where the wedding garter tradition came from but I can imagine that it was from a time when garters were a popular fashion item and its was the thing to do to slip into it and carry with you a love note or poem from your sweetheart. A rather more romantic scenario than the groom pulling it off with his teeth. !!!

I see mostly they tend to be blue or have a blue element in them which doubles up as the something blue.

But as with all wedding stuff - if you don't want one - don't have one. But as mentioned before most of the time I find that it has been brought by the Mum and not the bride for herself. Just make it clear that under NO circumstances will you be having a picture of it.

No -definitely not wearing a garter. To me it’s outdated and not something I would do. My fiancé is reasonably quiet and not really into being the centre of attention so we aren’t even having a best man or speeches.
My something blue is my 50s style petticoat to go under my tea length wedding dress.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds it creepy, I was wondering if I was just a really boring person haha.
Thanks for the wisdom and insight into wedding prep though Bill. (The teeth thing came from googling it’s purpose) 😊

Urgh, no! I have a few American friends who have had one so they can do the garter toss thing, but I find the whole idea utterly nauseating (plus how on earth do you explain it to any curious small children in the audience who want to know why that funny man is crawling under the lady's skirt?!!)
