Both work but it depends on the chap really. I bought wing collars for my groom and bestman but on trying them the wing collar was really unflattering and gave him no neck so he wore a normal with a cravat tie....

this was with waist coat, jacket and kilt tho.

I think i prefer a normal collared shirt , the wing collar just looks too small for the bulk of the cravatte to me , ...thanks for the pic .

Depends on the type of cravat.

Ascot cravat, you should wear a normal collar shirt with a fly front. http://www.bunneyblog.com/2010/01/ascot-cravats-part-four.html

Traditional Kensington cravat: Should be worn with a traditional wing collar shirt.

A Ruche or scrunchy style of cravat, can be worn either with a cross collar shirt (a swept back wing) or a normal collar (as above)

We've gone for a wing collar as we've got the ruche cravats, it looked too busy with a normal collar.

Traditionally I should be a wing collar but, as the first poster said, this can remove the neck region. It is best to try both and see which looks the best really.

A wing collar does not have to have deep neck stand. Most wing collars are the same depth in the collar stand as a regular shirt. If anything a regular shirt is a fraction higher in the neck stand as you the second part (collar part) which folds over.

Some shops only hire or sell the deep ones. These are generally rubbish unless you are a perfect size and a have a long neck.

My rule of thumb is, Normal length Jacket : Regular Collar

Long Jacket or Tails : Wing Collar
