Winter wedding

Jade1990, 20 October, 2015 at 15:59 Posted on Planning 0 69

Whats peoples thoughts on winter weddings?

I've looked at summer prices and they are extortionate, and I dont want to cut costs by having a less than perfect venue, so thought why not have my perfect venue but have it in winter!

Apart from the weather what else should I be worried about?

Thinking late November early December 2017. Or would January be a better option? I know xmas is stressfull enough without having a wedding to organise! I have bridesmaids who are teachers so I have to have a weekend wedding, so did think between xmas and new year - but decided against that as wasnt sure people would want to come to a wedding over the festive season!

I'm getting totally stressed about weddings and have only been planning for a month, anyone else having a winter wedding who can give some advice?

Thanks in advance

As a trainee teacher i can tell you november/december in school is hectic as sin. just horrific.

so from a bridesmaid POV, unless you're not expecting anything more from them than getting them to show up, i'd avoid those months personally.

i had a february wedding but that was because i WANTED winter as i loathe summer. but my wedding was horrifically expensive so i'm hardly the poster girl for cheaper winter weddings

I'm getting married on 26th November 2017 (which I suppose is a winter wedding!)

I love the idea of it and think it's different to a usual summer wedding plus our venue charges £2000 more in summer seasons!

Were going for a winter colour theme and are hoping to find a lot of winter related things in the January sales (after Christmas!) which I think are all positives to having a winter wedding Smiley smile

Thats the date I have provisionally booked lol! I wasnt sure if that was more autumn but I'd call it winter too haha.

I thought winter was different..everyone has a summer wedding, and the decorations you can have are beautiful.

Overall for venue food and drink for 95 day and 60 evening additional guests its coming to £8800 which I'm not sure is good or not, but for the same sunday 2 months earlier in september it was £12,300!

My venue in the sticks and the snow it horrendous when we get it, but have been advised they have a snow plough which is a bonus lol

I've always loved the idea of winter weddings and the good excuse to serve guests welcome drinks of hot chocate etc. Images of roaring fires and decorations of white twigs and crystals etc. Lol not to mention snow.

I'm having a Lapland winter wedding to guarantee snow tho.

I think post Xmas is a bit of a gloomy toe for a lot so a January wedding could be better than busy Nov Dec.

Just get a good photographer and see pics of low light winter weddings. X

December is popular for weddings. If you want to save the most try Feb/March.

The week between Christmas and new year is more popular than you'd think! Also, the main hotels will be doing lots of corporate parties in December & corporate conferences in January.

I wrote an article about saving on seasonal differences here http://ww2.ollievision.co.uk/wp/index.php/save-money-on-your-wedding/

We're having a winter wedding but not until January 2019, so I'm afraid I'm useless at planning advice because we have barely started yet. We had 2 dates in mind one in September 2018 and the January one, I started looking into honeymoon's, where we want to go is hurricane season in September! we decided that we wanted to go on honeymoon straight after getting married and so we chose the January date instead, it will be around our 10 year anniversary so also has meaning.

I'm actually looking forward to a winter wedding, it's my 2nd marriage and for my first I got married in August and it was the hottest day of the year, I got so stressed out with my hair and make up melting, everyone kept going outside to get air and so the venue looked half full most of the time

Hopefully the venue that we choose will have nice log fires and will be really romantic, my only concern at the moment is if we choose a venue that's a bit remote, will the guests be able to travel through the country roads, But I'll make sure that I bring that up with the venue at the time.

Good Luck with your planning, I look forward to reading all about it x

Oh great I'm glad I'm not the only one.

My chosen venue is a barn so I'm worried that people will be too cold but it has heated floors and a nice big log fire so hopefully not.

Im stressing out about my reception though - I'm having the whole day including the ceremony at the same venue and usually they have the drinks reception after the ceremony outdoors. They do have firepits so people can keep warm and my canapes are hot as well as hot drinks so hopefully it wont be an issue providing there isnt a blizzard!

Where is your honeymoon? I havent even thought about that yet

I got married on 29th November last year! So a winter wedding.

We got married then as we worked it out to be about £5k cheaper than getting married at the same place in summer. Seeing as we didn't mind what time of year we got married, we just went for it based on the price difference.

Turned out great, and the weather was a little chilly, but bright sunshine and clear blue sky all day!

We used pine cones and candles and logs as centre pieces and decor and only had flowers for the bouquets (which I made so minimal expense) We embraced winter themes!

I think so long as you prepare for the weather to be bad just in case, and don't let that affect any plans you have for the day, then a winter wedding is wonderful!

They might be lucky and their schools do very little, but ours is non-stop from late october til end of term. you don't finish school to gone 6, and you don't finish work til well gone 10/11. saturdays are often spent in school or trying to sleep. my school is mad! lol

as i say, if all you want/need is for them to turn up on the day then you'll be golden, but if they're unlucky like me and you're after more, it may be a little more tricky......

it'll all work out in the end though i'm sure Smiley smile

We've opted for a late February wedding - this coming feb 27th. Saved about £5,000 on the venue hire! We were torn between Nov and Feb but thought it might be nice to have something to look forward to after Christmas Smiley smile

Our venue is a barn in the middle of nowhere too but have found out there is a wedding the night before so hoping if we did have terrible snow they'd of cleared a lot of it beforehand

One thing were having to think about is lighting for photos and general timings for the day. We're having a 2pm ceremony and should have enough time before it gets too dark for general photos but we thought a meal about 5pm will mean the barn will be covered in fairy lights and tea lights and will look all twinkly and pretty!

Winter weddings are fantastic but as someone said make sure you get a good photographer to photograph it and knows how to handle low light and not over use a flash to make your photos look like guests photos.

I agree that December seems to be getting more popular. We are getting married this year between Christmas and New Year. Once you get into the planning process you realise that it's not as 'off season' as you may think. However i don't think having BM who are teachers should necessarily put you off December, I'm a primary teacher of 16 years so I know only too well how busy the half term before Christmas is in school but I've still gone for December. As long as you are organised and give them plenty of advance dates for dress fittings etc it should be fine. I am aiming to do as much during Oct half term as possible hence first fitting, hair/ make up trial and menu tasting all booked for that week. I had my hen at the end of August. Plus it depends how much involvement you want them to have, I only have one adult BM (my niece) and she is away at uni so hasn't done much apart from choose her dress and shoes. It's important that you choose a date which suits you (after all it will be your anniversary date for the rest of your life). Good luck

We were looking at a wedding in January in the UK but am now going abroad but do not worry about the weather there are lots of quirky ideas for photos in bad weather. We thought December would be tough but everyone is really excited and we have basically cancelled Xmas this year haha. I did find some venues wanted extra in dec as they have the Xmas decs out so we had to pay for those in effect! a few winter ideas:

wellies for the risk of rain!

    Under umbrella photos

scarves, wraps, boleros, pashminas or cloaks

    candles

    pine cone etc centre pieces

    bauble centrepieces

Gah I can go on lol google winter wedding ideas. Also just a thought we had - if it's the thought of weather that puts you off just think you can pay a fortune for an August wedding and still run the risk of rain

Yes thats a very valid point - I keep getting wrong for basing my wedding plans on everyone else and like you say its our day so should go with what we think. I want to do everything planning wise (which might not be as easy as I think) so aslong as they plan me a good hen do and show up on the day thats fine by me.

I also get october half term off as well as 2 weeks in august 2 weeks at xmas and a week at easter in my job so atleast we can all figure things out in the half term holidays if needs be.

Thanks for your advice Smiley smile

Oh wow I love them!! Thank you ?

There are lots of quirky ideas which is why I liked the idea of winter, its different from the usual summer wedding and with me wanting a barn wedding I think it will be really cosy even if its snowing outside.

I dont want xmas decorations as in xmas trees and tinsel etc, as I still want to go for quite a rustic barn style theme which is what I wanted all along, so hopefully I can get away without paying extra for the use of their xmas decorations.

Where are you getting married abroad?

I didn't want Christmassy colours for my winter wedding either. I've gone down the fur coat over my dress and flowers of pale pink and ivory colours with snow berries and lots of silvery grey winter foliage. Similar colours to this.

I love that its beautiful. I think christmas can get a bit tacky sometimes and as much as I love decorating my house 'christmassy' I want my wedding to be different.

October is still pretty much "in season" November is sort of a no mans land because people are now looking and thinking ahead of Christmas so could be good for deals, around Christmas and new year is very much in season and is a peak out on its own, as also is Easter- without even looking I know when Easter is because that weekend is usually booked very early so bear that in mind if thinking about an Easter wedding.

Again like has been stressed ask any potential wedding photographer to show you winter weddings to prove that they can handle the conditions I have a gallery of summer rain/indoors and winter weddings HERE

We are getting married the day after boxing day, and it seems to be going down well with most of our guests. A lot of family have moved away but return home at Christmas so it suits them, and it falls in the lull between Christmas and new year where almost everyone has lots of time off and not a lot of plans. Granted a few friends that we would have liked to have come have family commitments, but the majority are able to make it. I'd avoid December before Christmas as people tend to be busy then, but even teacher friends should be able to make it afterwards. Its all personal preference though, we initially chose winter as the venue we wanted was booked up next summer but are now excited for our mulled wine and hot chocolates!

I have looked at 28th December 2017 actually but wasnt sure if people would think it was too hectic to go to a wedding.

I thought it would be ideal as xmas holidays alot of people off work already, plus its mid week so alot cheaper.

I love the idea of a warm cosy winter wedding, its different from the usual summer weddings and I know from my own experience having 3 or 4 weddings within a few months makes them all roll into one so hopefully people will be ready for a good get together by december.

We were worried about that but the majority of our guests seem to think its a great time for a wedding (or at least say that to our faces)! It depends on the people you are inviting, if they have kids or their families are out of town it might be tricky, but the majority are busy in the run up to Christmas but not so much afterwards. If people want to be there they will make the effort, and if not then it saves you some money Smiley smile

We arent having any children other than our 2 nephews and my brother, so I suppose people would need to arrange childcare. I suppose if people want to come they will make an effort to be there and we have to go with what we want rather than other people. Thanks for the help.

Hi! I got married in late January in central London. It was cold, and rained for a lot of the day, but luckily we had really cozy venues, so it didn't matter at all. I think it depends a lot on the venue you choose. Cozy and intimate spaces are really nice in winter. I've been to several Christmas weddings too, and the atmosphere is always that tiny bit more special.

I love the idea of winter weddings too! We've gone with oct 15th next year, so technically Autumn. I'd have adored Christmas (and probably would have gone all out Christmas tack ?)

We're planning for it to rain, and if it doesn't it's a bonus! So wellies, me and bridesmaids are having faux fur wraps, we've gone with a navy blue and lace theme ?

For photos we booked someone who has experience with low light and bad weather. If it is raining, were also thinking about handing around 2 clear see through brollies and sharpies as the guests are waiting for the ceremony, and they all sign with good luck messages. Then our photos after the ceremony will be with them ? (nice idea but not yet sure how that's going to work!)

Also, please yourselves not everyone else - it's your day, your date, and celebrating the two of you coming together as a loving couple. If people want to be there, they'll make sure they're there ?
