Winter wedding dress

8 June, 2014 at 08:04 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi all,

Am recently engaged but firmly in the grips of wedding-planning fever!! I'm having sooooo much fun but there is so much to think about so these forums are brilliant Smiley smile

I'm planning a winter wedding (Nov 2015) and want a dress that speaks to that so am wondering if anyone can advise me about the best time of year to start shopping for one i.e. when there will be the most choice of dresses fit for a winter wedding?

Also, do stores order in dresses for you to try? I've found a Pronovias dress on line but the only stores with it are in Leeds and Glasgow which are just too far away (I'm in Surrey just south of London)... Any suggestions for well-stocked stores around Surrey or Hampshire?

Thanks so much for any and all help and advice xxx

I'm also having a winter wedding; I wouldn't say there is much difference in summer and winter dresses it's more around the accessories that you put with them and the detailing. For example my dress is strapless and comes up into points at the front so to me it's a bit ice queen like (but that's my interpretation) and I will be wearing a faux fur shrug

Hello, I'm getting married dec 2015 and I have been told by one shop to start looking now to give the store a chance to get dresses in if I can't find anything I like in store. I am going dress shopping 25th July (soooooo excited!!!) and I have been looking at lace accessories such as sleeves to make it look a tad more winter themed. I have decided what styles I will not be going for such as the Greek maxi dress style as that is defiantly summer! But I am trying to keep open minded about else I can have as I think a lot can work for both winter or summer

Also you can usually order dresses in at a cost and usually from a store that stocks the designer your after. I would call ahead

Whereas I'm getting married December 2014 and only went dress shopping last week, having only set the date 3 weeks before that. There's no need to rush into anything.

Contact one of your local Provonias stores and ask them if they can get it in. There will likely be a charge (I paid £70 for a local stockist of the designer I liked to get in a specific dress) but they usually take that off the cost of the dress if you order (the shop I went to said she would deduct it from the cost of ANY dress I chose from her store, not only if I bought the one I'd ordered in).

Be prepared that you may not like the one you've fallen in love with online when you try it on. First time I got married I was convinced I wanted a particular Alfred Angelo dress but when I tried it, it wasn't right. I ended up with a Mori Lee which was completely different but more me. This time round I've bought the one I loved online.

I don't think there's really any such thing as 'winter' and 'summer' wedding dresses. Obviously some are more material heavy and that makes them more suitable for wearing in colder weather, but there are brides who wear those in summer and I'm having a tea length dress in December. As someone else said, it's about how you accessorise it.

    Good luck. ?

Word of advice on pronovias dresses... Every one is made to order and after waiting 6months my friend got the news that it hadn't passed quality control and had to be remade which took ages. They are very popular so take time to arrive. I'm getting married December 2015 and I ordered mine last month. It's never too early to start looking xx

I don't think there will be much difference but I would say bolero/shrug up i.e. make sure you have matching warm pretty top layer. The bridal capes look well cool but watch out for it getting damp in potential rain/snow

Sounds to me like you're on the right track - heavier materials are recommended by bridal shops for winter because of warmth etc but also because they're less likely to take off in a gust of wind. Pronvoia stockists, if you love them, are listed here: https://www.pronovias.com/gb/shop-finder

As an earlier poster said, you can make any dress wintery or summery with the right accessories - I'm taking advantage of our almost Christmas date to add a hint of sparkle!

Just for a bit more data - I ordered my wedding dress in late October last year, so 14 months before the wedding, but that was mainly because my family and I are massively over-conservative on forward planning. The dress shop advised us no later than 9 months in advance would give a good margin for error but that they could turn things round in 6 if necessary.

(Oh and congrats on the engagements)
