Call your local registry office, they'll be able to tell you straight away. I would've thought they'd have to be 16 though.

I dobn't think you can sign a legal document until you're 18. I might be wrong tho.

In England and Wales there is no legal minimum age at which someone can be a witness. The witness must be able to fully understand the proceedings and be capable ot testifying to the facts should this be required HOWEVER some registration authorities may adopt their own policy of, say, minimum age 18.

If this is the case then the Registrar may be happy for the younger person to sign the register providing 2 others meeting their policy also sign as witnesses.

I never thought about the age thing........both my sons are best men at my wedding in 3 weeks..........16 & 23.........wanted both of them to sign the register.

Better phone them Monday to chick if this is ok............I would have liked to ask when we meet the registrar but as they told us yesterday one won't be appointed until 2 weeks before the wedding and we prob won't be able to meet him/her until a few days before! ?it will be tricky...........sorry ranting on someone elses post.
