Witnesses... How many?!

Yasmin, 24 October, 2020 at 10:02 Posted on Planning 0 3
So, we're planning to marry in 2022 with 50 attending the day (covid permitting!)

I've got 4 bridesmaids, and my young nephew will be ring bearer (hopefully!) so, trying to include my family as much as possible because no doubt someone will have a moan they don't have any official roles, I'm wondering how many official witnesses we're able to have? And usually who are they?
Help. Please.

There are 2 witnesses required for a UK marriage. They can be whoever you like

Never actually came across any questions about the max numbers but the law as Sarah says is that you need 2 in the uk and they can be anyone you like - even a total stranger .

There is I believe only room for two witness to sign the register, perhaps you could have an extra two witnesses but they will not be "actual witnesses" that sign the register.

The only thing I can think of is that if you explain and ask your registrar if they could say "your 4 witnesses", as part of the ceremony then name them, you could also include them in a photo of you and your other half with the set up register photo along with the other two signing witnesses.

You only need 2 official witnesses and they can be anyone - they just have to be adults and able to understand the promises you are making. Can you include any of the others in the ceremony, e.g. doing a reading? If any are musical, can you get them to play or maybe even to sing? Someone could also welcome people and others could act as ushers/hand out orders of service.
