Witnesses - who to ask?

hkj, 17 January, 2010 at 11:21 Posted on Planning 0 7

Is there a norm? Somewhere in the back of my mind i seem to remember reading Chief Bridesmaid and Best Man, but sure i have also seen parents do it?

It is quite a significant part of the day so need to get it right but dont want to risk offending anyone by not asking them...

You need 2 - one each.

Traditionally it was the role of the brdiesmaid and best man but these days, when people have too many people to ask, then it can be anyone you want really.

We're having our brothers do it.

I think it's nice to have parents or siblings, especially if they are not part of the wedding party. Best Man and Bridesmaid already have a role. Don't forget witnesses must be over 18!

We're having our Mums. My Dad is doing the ceremony and Chris' dad is doing a reading so it seemed a good way to include them all x

Our vicar seems to have a 'the more the merrier' attitude. He said he's had up to 15 people as witnesses before . . . or maybe he was winding me up?

My dad and our best man were our witnesses my MOH wasn't asked as the vicar kind of chose who were to be my witnesses and stuck with just the two men! I don't think anyone minded perhaps they'd not even given it a thought! I have been to other weddings though and the MOH and best man have been the witnesses -and others where they have had more than two witnesses as well. 15 is pushing it slightly tho ? you'd be there for ages and there wouldn't be a lot of room!
