Wooden Roses Want to know what you think

loxtonm, 15 March, 2009 at 22:20 Posted on Planning 0 17

Hi All

I have been looking into flower ideas and have come across wooden roses and want to know what you think. I know I want roses and don't really want to go for real ones due to our budget. I have attached some photos for you to see. I thought the arangements look nice but could with some added touches like ribbon round the stems. I have shown my H2B but he didn't really say much because its my discision and whatever I go for he will love.

Looking forward to hearing about what you all think

Personally I do not like them and think they look clumsy and cheap. I would much prefer to use silk flowers than these. They would not do your outfit any justice and I'd be worried about them snagging the fabric of the dress too. You will find them cumbersome and 'heavy' throughout the day, as you put them down...pick them up...put them down..

so my opinion is a No. Sorry.

WSS - naff and remind me of pound shops. sorry if that offends. would everyone have wooden roses as their buttonholes? can't imagine how that would work.....

to echo what nona has said, there are some brilliant silk flower HIBs on here who do amazing arrangements - you'd never guess they weren't real. why don't you put a thread out for them asking them to tout their wares?

We had wooden roses... everything!! I even made a button hole for every guest in the months leading up to the wedding. Most still have them. My bouquet takes pride of place next to my favourite picture on my dressing table. The centre piece went to my Grandma (in the picture below) because she loved it. They last forever!!!!!! The whole thing (my bouquet, 3 bridesmaids bouquets, 6 mens buttonholes, 4 corsages, the centre pieces and 2 thank you bouquets for the mums, plus the 100 button holes I did for the guests) cost us a total of £130!!!! The same thing in the same flowers I was quoted anything from £800 - £2000 for in fresh flowers.

I have the number of a great girl who put mine together for me. I gave her a photo and she had no trouble in recreating it perfectly!! Email me if you want her number. She can send them anywhere in the UK.

Very much what Nona and bluewater say, they are quite clumsy and do snag delicate fabrics easily. You can also have a colour run problem as the dye can leech out if your hands get damp.

Silk flowers are a very affordable route, and need not look fake, unless you want them to (eg bright blue roses)

Here are some examples of silks that I create

There is also Jackie at www.flowersforspecialdays.co.uk, Brenda at Rainbow and Sherrie at aislebeyours

You will be more than welcome to see what any of us can do for you

I agree with the others. Why spend a fortune on a dress, venue, photographers and then have cheap flowers? I sometimes don't get the logic in buying cheap flowers which will be as much a part of your day as the rest.

They don't look real and I would be worried about the dye in them running should you have any rain! ( fingers crossed you don't)

Artificial flowers are much more realistic and not as expensive as fresh. Here are some examples:

I actually think the wooden roses look quite nice but maybe, as some have said, might not be that practical due to the snagging, weight and dye issues.

I'm really loving the pictures of the silk flowers and think I might go down that route for my flowers. I got my first shock in the florists on Friday when I found out how much fresh flowers are going to cost for the day. Plus, the silk ones you can keep forever.

Might do an appeal for HIBs that do silk flowers.

Hi Megan - sorry I'm not a fan of the wooden flowers either. I have to agree with what others have said and think you would be better off with silk flowers, they look more realistic and are more practical.

ps Sherrie I'm loving those orchids!

I actually prefer the look of wooden flowers to silk ones (looking at all the pics on this thread). I think they look nicer than silk ones but that's just my opinion, not intended to offend anyone.

I would be concered about snagging also etc but wouldn't you be able to wrap ribbon round the stems & bottom to prevent this happening??? - don't know, just surmising!

Snagging is a problem with the wooden heads rather than the stems as such but one of the other problems is the dye comes out easily in the rain - although every Bride hopes for good weather! I think they have a bit of a poor reputation because they tend to be sold only in pound shops and market stalls. In fact, I was looking at some this morning in town - 10 for a £1. Here are a few more artificial bouquets for you that I have made in the past:-

Hope it gives you a few ideas.

I understand everbody's concerns about the wooden roses but in my experience (maybe I was using different kind, I don't know) but we didn't get any snags, my dress was lace and there is not one snag on it, my mum's was lace, my mother in law's was crochet, my bridesmaids had easily 'snaggable' dresses but we didn't suffer anything at all.

If they're cheap versions then yes they may not be made well and may indeed snag but our didn't. We were very lucky, I take it.

They're also not that heavy, in fact, fresh flowers in the same size and shape as mine were a lot heavier than mine, which was another reason why I went for the wooden roses as I could have the style I wanted without the excess weight (my dress was heaby enough!)

They all look fab though, if I couldn't have found the girl I did, I would have gone for silk flowers. They can look incredibly stunning!!

Personally I'm not a fan as they look too uniform for me and too stiff. I prefer natural flowers but understand these can be expensive. I have worked well with my florist to find some cheaper alternatives and now have a natural flower bouquet with roses and freesias which I know will be brilliant. ISome of the silk flowers look really great too. think it's down to your personal choice at the end of the day.

Thank you! It was gorgeous... if I do say so myself. I fell in love with it but couldn't pull it off in the same way with fresh flowers.

Personally i don't like wooden roses. The ones in the pics you posted are very uniformed and would look better with some open roses in maybe, rather than just buds..also maybe some foliage to add some contrast. The pictures monkey bear posted look more realistic, but again the bridesmaids ones would look more realistic with a few open roses in them IMO. (no offence intended)

As other have said silk/artifical flowers can also work with a modest budget and the right quality of flowers can look very realistic.

If you do decide to go with silk please feel free to look at our website - www.passionweddingflowers.co.uk. We often have brides that come to us with a budget and from there we can work out how to get the most for their money.

Also have you thought about hiring flowers ...as this can work out at half the price of buying them, and you can decide which flowers/ items to hire and which to buy to keep.
