Wording for open bar, with restrictions... help!

12 June, 2013 at 14:50 Posted on Planning 0 18

So, we're having an open bar, but limiting it to house wines, standard spirits and mixers, beer.... no shots, malts, premium spirits. I was going to put a sign up on the bar so people knew this, but I'm not sure how to word it. Normally I'm ok with words, but with only 3 sleeps to go I'm officially brain dead! Any help would be appreciated... so far I have 'don't rip the arse out of it guys' but that doesn't seem in keeping with the occassion!!

I think that would be suitable! If need be I'm sure the bar staff can let the guests know what is /isn't included.

I've only been at one wedding where it was an open bar - and no one ripped the arse out it which was surprising as it was an army wedding and those boys tend to be thirsty.... gives me hope that it's achieveable at mine!

We'd like you all to have a drink,

To help us mark the day,

A way to increasde the bonhomie,

And best of all - we'll pay!

Him & Her have tied the knot,

    She's now a Mrs, not a Miss.

And we'd like you all to celebrate,

But please don't take the generosity for granted.

    Our resources are not limited,

And we have to think of our bankers,

So, while you're free to have a drop,

Please don't act like irresponsible drinkers.

We'd love to buy you all some drinks

    To help enjoy the day

But if its spirits or champagne you'd like

Then oops you'll have to pay!

People do not expect a free bar - they'll be over the moon to have one. So any restrictions will not cause any problems whatsoever. My guests will be buying their own!

    Good luck!

    I'd go for:

"Open bar for house wines, beer, standard spirits and mixers."

But I'm all about simple information and getting the message across. Depending on the crowd I might also add in the last verse of Guy's poem (although I've now written my own as I obviously have too much time on my hands today!) because whilst I'm not a fan of using poetry to convey a message I do like this sort of comic 'not a rhyme but you know the word that would rhyme' type of thing!

"Have a drink on us on our wedding day,

That's right, on us, we'll pay!

But do please remember our bankers,

And don't act like irresponsible... people!"

    No shots, doubles or bubbles.

Anyone who tries to mix a nice single malt with a mixer ought to be chucked out!

I wouldn't say "enjoy responsibly" -it's exactly what alcohol companies have to add on to their alcohol adverts, so sounds a bit adverty or corporate if you know what I mean.

I would say nothing, and let bar staff explain it. We had the same as ours - put tab behind the bar but knew it wouldn't last if everyone had double shots etc, so bar staff just explained to people was for wine, beer and soft drinks. It wasn't my worry.

I also wouldn't say anything about being cheeky, sounds quite patronising IMC.

    That's probably the best idea.

I'd let the bar staff handle it, but saw a post about it here once that said

    No doubles or bubbles

we're hoping to have a free bar, but we'd probably do something like that,,,

you must be getting so excited, have a wonderful wonderful day Smiley smileSmiley smileSmiley smile

Yes agree with the earlier suggestion to let the staff decide. Hopefully this won't offend your MIL and if people try to take the mick, word will spread quick enough that they can't get certain things. Sure the bar staff will be used to dealing with such issues!

I'm planning on stocking the bar myself, so if I don't buy it, they can't have it!
