Would you buy second hand crockery?

Well, mugs really is what I had in mind. As a child growing up in the 80's I had some mugs that I used to use at my Nans house and I loved them - I had to have them whenever I had a drink there. ? I had the originals up to fairly recently but over time they've all got broken and thrown away which I was sad about as they had a lot of memories for me. I've just searched on ebay as the company that made them has long since packed up trading. You can, it seems buy them off ebay but they are obviously second hand and that's grossing me out a bit? Would you buy a second hand mug off the internet? The rational side says its no different to eating out in a restaurant/cafe etc and of course I'd throughly clean the mug but I'm not sure I could ever shake the feeling that it wasn't 'new' and could have come from somewhere dirty. ?

Am I being irrational ?

I'm a bit funny about second hand stuff but I don't think that buying second hand crockery would bother me. Like you say its just like eating out but at least you've cleaned it yourself so know that its clean.

If you're that concerned, you could buy some Milton and dunk it in to sterilise it? That's what I do with second hand toys that might have been drooled on etc.

I probably would yes, but I'd give it a good wash with bleach too!

I buy second hand china but mainly things like plates and jugs. I'd happily buy 2nd hand glasses so I suppose mugs aren't any different. I'd definitely bleach them though.

I would buy second hand crockery, e.g. if a couple of plates from a matching set got broken and I still liked the pattern and couldn't get new ones I'd buy second hand rather than a whole new set.

Having said that, I don't think I'd buy it in the sort of situation you're talking about, purely because I would always know they were replacements and not the 'real thing' as it were, so it just wouldn't be the same. Better to make new memories with new mugs, IMHO, even though it's sad not to have the old ones anymore.
