Would you eat food left on your doorstep?

Zoay, 22 September, 2008 at 21:44 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

Odd question, I know.

I've just returned from visiting my husband in hospital to find a carrier bag on the doorstep. Inside are some new potatoes, a head of brocolli and 2 home made pies in china dishes, and a sticky toffee pudding. No note, no phone or text messages, no email to say who from.

It's almost certainly someone terribly kind who heard H was ill and has brought us a meal.

But it could be the Mad Doorstep Poisoner.

Also, I was out 4.5 hours so I don't know how long it's been there, what's in the pies, etc.

I'm leaning quite strongly towards not eating it even though it's a sad rebuttal of someone's kindness ? I do have one guess as to who it might be and might contact them...

    ? at Mad Doorstep Poisoner!

I'd check with the person you suspect and just ask when they left it there, in a subtle way, of course.

Has it been very warm where you are? I'd be inclined to eat it as I hate waste especially when someone's gone to all that effort.

Put it in the fridge and phone around. It's been quite cool, they'll be fine. How do you kill someone with veg anyway?

Hope your H is ok ?

I have to say yes as I do every week (doorstep veg delivery), however in your case I'm not so sure. I'd probably take it in and store for a day to see if anyone owned up / enquired about it, if not I think I would get rid.

Could you ring/text round and find out who left it? Surely there can't be that many likely candidates?

Seems a shame to waste it. The broccoli and potatoes should definitely be ok. Seems very wrong to let the pudding go to waste too!?

Hmmm... I have to confess that I'd find it hard to turn down food, particularly sticky toffee pudding, even if there was a chance the Mad Doorstep Poisoner was in town. However, I'm not known for being terribly sensible. ?

What's in the pies? Surely if they're reheated thoroughly it should kill off lurking bugs? (you'd never think that I have a basic food hygiene certificate: I really should know the answer to this sort of question!)

Hope that Lee's OK and that the hospital visit wasn't too traumatic.

Ah, the mystery is solved. It was Chief Suspect No.1 (our curate's wife.)

We shall have it for dinner tomorrow night ?

Is the sticky toffee pudding homemade? I would eat that certainly but then hell nor high water would keep me away from a sticky toffee pud.

If it has been cool out then I would say it is probably ok because if I make a pie I would leave it out to cool for that kind of time and then put it in the fridge. But I can understand why you're wary.

That aside what a lovely thing for someone to do.

Hope you find the "culprit" soon

The visit was great. It's one thing to be told on the phone that someone is ok, and another to see them and touch them and see that they're ok. He has another op to come in 2 weeks and then a further test to check it's all worked. So I see our cruise in 2 weeks and 3 days getting rather unlikely. but I'd rather have H well.

Anyone who knows you well enough to make you pies and trust you with their china dishes can't be that bad. ?

Go on, eat it... it'll be like a pot luck supper. ?

Hope all went as well as possible with Mr Z's op today. [lkiss]

"Chief suspect no. 1: the curate's wife" - it sounds like the title of the first installment of a pulp fiction thriller!

I hope the meal is as tasty as it sounds - it's lovely when people look out for you.

Yes, I would. We do occasionally come home to find a carrier bag of eggs/plums/veg and what have you on the doorstep, and I wouldn;t have any hesitation (though I see what you mean about the pies and not knowing how long they'd been there). As Mrs Magic said, I'd think anything in a china dish was probably a kind donation.

Also, I've done something similar - a couple of harvests ago, I decided to make crumbles (we'd been given huge amounts of apples and plums) for the usual recipients of harvest goodies (the widows of the village ?) and spent a Sunday afternoon delivering crumbles all over, albeit witha short, slightly cryptic note on the lids.

What a lovely lady! For future reference I think I'd definitely eat STP of dubious provenance as nothing is going to grow on something that sugary (nothing at all to do with my STP obsession, oh no ?)

Can I just say, if it so happens you don't like STP, I like it more than anyone here, and would be willing to look after it for you ?

    I'd eat it.

I've done this too, usually lasagne for new mums... Though I've taken to freezing it first so if it's there for a while it's still cold IYSWIM, and I'd usually leave a note ?

Where does this woman hang out, I'm thinking of stalking her so she'll leave pies on my front doorstep too.

What an utter pain about the cruise- can you postpone it (rather than cancelling)?
