wrong post - what do I do with it?

29 August, 2008 at 12:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Just got a letter addressed to someone else, at this address. It's also got the wrong postcode on it, so not sure what's happened there.

Do I just put it back in the letterbox with 'not known at this address written on it?

Sorry for stupid question, my mind's gone totally blank ?

That's what I'd do, but Royal Mail have changed their policy of returning mail, and if there is no visible sign of the sender's address on the front or back of the envelope, they'll shred it.

    Not your problem though.

Can you not look on the Royal Mail site and try to find the right address?

Oddly enough I was going to start a post thread.

I've just got a piece of mail for Mr Hole's ex girlfriend before me, it's freaked me out a bit ?

To answer your question I would pop it back in the postbox.

That's right, we bought this place a year ago so it's vay vay odd.

Am looking out the window to see if I can spot a bitter blonde woman hiding in the bushes ?

I haven't told him, I'm going to leave the letter on the top of his pile with a post it attached saying "something I should know" ?

    Sorry for crashing, Mrs Jess!

This happened to me recently - if you look up the postcode on the Royal Mail website, you will be able to see what house numbers it does apply to (I presume it's only slightly different to yours?). Then you could try BT.com to confirm the name. Or 192.com if you have any credits. Although this does seem a bit borderline stalking?. I ended up asking a neighbour if they knew the person, and it turned out to be the house opposite - so the address basically had given my house number accidentally but their postcode.

This is all if you can really be bothered... ?

is it a credit agency letter? Sometimes they will look at the people the person they are trying to find is connected with and send a letter to the connected persons current address.

Crikey, you're all positively saintly! I'd open it (neatly of course) to see if there's more of a clue to the address inside - it might be accurate on the correspondence. If it's important, I'd re-address the envelope and re-post it, or if it wasn't I'd either put it back in the post or bin it depending on my mood
