WWYD - Annoying neighbours

mrsdrc2b, 29 August, 2009 at 14:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Sorry this is probably going to just turn in to a rant but I'm so fed up with it all. We live in a maisonette and our downstairs neighbours are so annoying. They constantly have their music on full blast - it's been going for the last 5 hours today. The woman comes back most days slams the front door and then screams abuse at her partner for hours at a time. They are also heavy smokers that don't seem capable of keeping their place clean. We can't leave our kitchen window open because the smell coming up from their kitchen is so digusting. We're kind of stuck where we are at the mo as we bought the place 2 years ago and in the current climate can't get a bigger mortgage. I've tried everything - enviromental health, talking to them, turning our music up (stupid I know!). I guess I'm just wondering if any one has any ideas? All suggestions welcome - i could do with a laugh.

Oh no, noisy neighbours are a nightmare. What happened when you talked to them?

I was told where to go! i actually went to school with her - she was a gobby cow even then. I actually feel quite sorry for her partner he just gets abuse hurled at him constantly - thank god they don't have kids!

God, what a nightmare! What happened with Environmental Health? When we had noisy neighbours, we spoke to the council and they told us to keep a two week diary of how the noise was affecting us, then they would take it from there. Luckily, they moved out so we didn't pursue it, but in your case, it sounds like they should be able to do something.

Other than that, it's a toughy. My H2B did throw cat poo (not our cat, local strays) into their garden when they were at their worst, just to make himself feel better! It didn't solve the noise problem, but there we are.

We had to keep a 'noise diary' for 4 - 6 weeks. I sent it in and then didn't hear anything. I called them a few weeks later and was told that they couldn't find a record of my initial complaint or the diary! I asked them to send another one out but they haven't. Useless!

Do they own their flat? I take it that they do, council tenants are easier to get things done about but it's not a lost cause, I was just about to post about our noisy neighbours who just moved in, no where near as bad as yours but we had to suffer a couple of hours of porn star like screaming, fingers crossed it was just first night excitement

www.nfh.org.uk is full of people with the same problems, have a look

That's awful! I know it won't solve the noise problem, but could you make a complaint about this to anyone? As it's affecting you so much, I think it's appalling that they lost your documents.

OH was telling me at breakfast earlier this week how he had been woken up at 2AM by her squealing like a pig - put me right of my cornflakes.

They rent their place privately but I have no idea who the landlord is. I will get back on to EH to get another diary and make sure they don't loss it this time! I've had several suggestions from friends about what to do, pretty sure most are illegal though, still I can dream.

Maybe you could find out who owns the flat, I'm sure I heard you can access the land registry online? (don't quote me, I may be totally wrong!)

Land registry is accessible to everyone, download their office copies (title documents) £3 and you can find out the owner of the flat and there will be an address for service for the owner.

If they are renting via the council, which is a distinct possibility - a lot of councils are renting huge amounts of private stock to cope with demand for temporary accomodation, then you can complain to their Anti Social Behaviour team. This is separate to environmental health. Its one phone call to your council to check. Other than that keep on with EH, they will be responsive if you have a persistent problem. HTH

Where abouts in the country are you? In some areas they offer a mediation service for people with problem neighbours. Check with your council. I know Manchester has one.
