WWYD - Mobile home in neighbours garden?

emma numbers, 29 October, 2008 at 16:07 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

What would you do if your neighbour put a mobile home in his garden and told you he was going to rent it out?

The guy behind us has done this and though it's not on our boundary we can see it from the upstairs windows. I know he's a bit hard up and sees this as a way of a regular income but I'm fairly sure it's not legal.

I'm inclined to ignore it but someone else has said that it will effect the house prices and they would report it to the council. I'm being a wuss and I don't want to get involved as I like getting on with all our neighbours but I am wondering if I really should do something.

So WWYD?

I'd rent it and live there instead.

If you are not looking to sell and it really doesn't bother you I wouldn't worry about it but I suspect it does bother you for you to post?

    Cunts ?

WT - It doesn't bother me but another of the neighbours wants it gone and is asking for support on this. I'm interested to see what Hitchers would do.

It really wouldn't bother me. I know a few homes by me that have a mobile home in the garden. The fact he might be renting it out wouldn't affect me and might be quite hard to prove anyway.

My mum has a static van in her garden as her house isn't big enough for all the granchildren to stay over during the holidays. No-one has ever complained about it.

Well, you could just tell the other neighbour to go ahead and report it, thus not getting your hands dirty. Personally I'd want it gone too. I mean, we're all struggling financially atm but that doesn't give us all licence to rent our bathrooms out to Polish migrant workers, right?

It definitely has planning implications - so your local Development Control Dept would be a good port of call. I'm in work atm but when I get home I can give you more info?

We had to obtain planning permission to have a static caravan in our garden (we are living in ours whilst rebuilding our house) as it was going to be permanently connected to services, e.g. sewerage, mains water etc. It can be very hard to obtain planning permission for this and I've heard of at many cases where planning consent has been refused.

A call to your local planning office should clarify the need for permission and whether it has been sought and obtained.

I suspect the council housing department would be interested in it. If you are bothered I would start with the council. If you aren't, then I would tell the neighbour who is, that he should report it to the council.

Ill be watching this thread with interest. next door but 1 has also put a mobile home in their garden and are renting it out to polish immigrants. there are about 20 of them living there.

its not connected up to the mains re sewerage, electricity etc so im not sure if they were still meant to get planning permission.

If it is being used as a permanent residential dwelling then it will need planning permission from the Council - and i would think it unlikely a Council would give permission for one in someones garden just so they can rent it out. definitly ring the Councils planning department.

I've had C, the neighbour that wants to complain, on the phone and it's definitely not legal to rent them out. He has been having a go at V, the neighbour with the caravan, and now they're not speaking. C wants me to support him in telling V to get rid of it or we will report him. I said I wouldn't but I would have a chat with V.

So I've just spoken to V and he's still raging at C but is going to get rid of it.

Mwnci - thanks for offering to look up more info but I think it's sorted (I hope!).

Pass the details on to the couple from the 'Is this a Hitcher' thread' Imagine, you could end up living next door to celebrities ?

real answer - If you are in a council property then ring your Estate or Housing Manager and ask them to file an 'anti social behaviour' ticket, or if not then ring your local councils planning Department. Either will work. You could let your neighbour do it on their own but

    A) That's not very neighbourly

    b) if you are both complaining they may even give it a higher priority

    c) if they don't have tenants in yet it is more more easily sorted out than when they do.

Report it. If it doesn't cause a problem then he'll surely get planning permission, so he'll be no worse off. And then they can be properly billed for council tax. And I'm sure he'll want to pay proper taxes on his income too. Just like the rest of us have to.
