WWYD? Sofa Palava with SCS, help please

MichelleK, 27 February, 2009 at 10:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

Morning All

I'll give you the whole story so you know what is going on, but I just wanted some opinions on the best way to deal with this. We are currently building an extension on our house which will leave us with a large Kitchen/Dining/Living space and would like a nice corner suite for the living area, we are estimating that the work will be completed June time. So just before Christmas we decided to pop into SCS whilst out shopping and happened to see a gorgeous suite that we really liked and the long and short of it is that we did place an order with the agreement that we would not want delivery until June. Fast forward to Wednesday of this week I get a call from the Manager of SCS saying that the suite we have on order has been discontinued and we can no longer have it, the order and the finance will be cancelled. I was absolutely gutted, so yesterday I decided to pop out and have a look round to see what else there is available, so I had a look in all the other usual shops, DFS, Harveys etc, and was passing another branch of SCS so decided to go in and see what else they had on offer. As the sales people often do they pounced on me as soon as I got in the door, so I explained to the man my situation, he said leave it with me he popped off out the back for a while.

Anyway when he came back he said that he has just spoken to his manager who rang Gino the Italian manufacturer of the suite and he has just enough leather to manufacture one more of these suites and he is prepared to shut down all other works just to get this made for us, BUT we would have to pay 25-30% more than what we were supposed to be paying, and I was not to mention this to the branch I had originally ordered from as otherwise all hell would break loose, and they wouldn't be able to do this for me anyway as they don't have the contact with gino!! Well what a load of drivel, basically they just want my order and my money. I left playing him at his own game and said I would discuss this with my husband and get back to him, he said I would have to let him know by Saturday pm.

So I am now tempted to call the branch I originally ordered from and explain what the second branch has said, as I do really want this suite but I am not prepared to pay any more money for it that the original price we agreed, but what should I say??

Just wanted to know what your opinions would be on this?

Many Thanks

Mich x

I'd walk away from SCS altogether i'm afraid, i'm sure there's plenty of other nice suites out there, you've just got to keep looking.

    Thanks ladies

I know that would be the most sensible thing to do, but we were having the suite in orange, and it has been difficult to find another suite that I like that does actaully come in orange.

FWIW we recently got a corner sofa from Homebase, not the best quality but you get what you pay for and it was cheap enough, we bought it thinking that with all the companies going belly up at present we'd probably be more likely to get it from Homebase than somewhere like SCS, Land of Leather IYSWIM and they delivered within about a week of ordering rather than the stupidly long 12/14 weeks.

Well I certainly wouldn't pay 25-30% more than the orginal order no matter how much I liked it.

Any links to the sofa? we might be able to help find one similar.

Even if you got this at the same price the "just enough leather" worries me. I'd be scared they were using off cuts and bodging it together. I;d certainly want to be very clear on my come back if I wasn't happy with the finish!

I think I'd walk away from it. Keep looking and the right thing will turn up.

Go back to second branch, say that you'll have the sofa but you want it at the original price (I can't really understand the argument as to why it would be more anyway especially as it's clearly rubbish that he a. has contact with the mythical "Gino" and b. that "Gino" would put all his other work on hold just to make some English customer the suite of their dreams!!

If they're so desperate for your business I reckon they'll do it for the original price.

PS- refer to "Gino" as "Mario" and see if he corrects you!!!!

I agree with this. Play them at their own game. He is clearly trying to poach business away from the original shop you went to so if he wants to do that, he needs to give you a better offer. Don't be afraid to walk away if they can't drop the price. If they absolutely won't reduce it then you should ask for more.......tables? cushions? pouffe? free delivery?

I bought a sofa from SCS a few years ago and was negotiating a deal with the manager. He wouldn't get the price as low as we needed so we walked out the shop. He followed us to the carpark with the cheapest bottle of plonk ever and asked us to come back in and discuss it further ? we got an extra £200 off by the time we left.

I would contact their head office and ask if they're aware of the games their branches play, and could they sort your suite out at the original price please?

WLS, what this 2nd branch is telling you sounds like total bull tbh, sounds like he has been dreaming up crap scripts in his sleep. I think you'll have much better luck reporting this blokes dodgy sales technique than playing them off against one another.

How funny PFlyn -'Refer to him as Mario next time' ?

Seriously, after that I would not prod them with an elongated barge pole.

SCS' after sales service is as crap as the service you've received so far. Go elsewhere.
