WWYD? What Can I do? - updated!

Mrs S Smith, 25 March, 2009 at 10:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

Hi all,

further to my email yesterday, I spent a good few hours on the phone to Sky and HSBC inbetween last night; I'd managed to sort it out so that I would only pay £49 for the Sky+HD Box, it would be ready for Saturday (yay!) and then £30 installation for the new property.. Now, issue I came across was my card kept getting rejected!!

My H got paid yesterday so there was plenty of money in there, I'd bought diesel in the morning, done the food shop at night, and everything was hunky-dory.. Still couldn't get it to process!!

By 9.30pm I gave up, Sky would've closed at that point, and then I spoke to someone at the bank who said to put an anti-referral marker on the account, which would be active for 30 mins as of the time I requested it.

So first thing this morning, called up the bank, 20 mins later I had the anti-referral marker on it (after having to argue with the advisor as to why I'd want it, again and again) and then sat on hold waiting for Sky for an additional 20 mins.. I spoke to someone at Sky, got everything through (I came across a bit rude to be honest, but I apologised) and then the card was STILL rejected!! According to Sky, the card couldn't authorise.. Has happened again and again, and when I've spoken to HSBC they can't see any issue with the card at all.

The card is a Visa Debit, and the only time that HSBC could see there had been an issue with the account was when I tried to use my old Solo card (expires at the end of the year, but I managed to upgrade to the Visa Debit) and I basically had to explain to the guy why I'd used it, and he just replied with a "Oh well Mrs S, you cannot use that" etc etc. GAAAAAAAAAH! I'm at my wit's end!

The only other thing I can do now, is to go and put some money into H's account at lunch, and try to do the payment from his card.. The woman at Sky is going to call me back between 1.30-2pm (she sounded like she wanted to have the ground swallow her up when I started crying ? ) and then do it from there.

I know it all sounds very melodramatic crying about Sky not being easy to sort out, but I'm just having such a stressful time with everything, so this sent me over the edge somewhat.. Is there anything else I can do?

I'm thinking about putting in a complaint, should I write to my bank about that? Because they're not accepting responsibility for it..

I know exactly how you feel with the frustration and wanting to cry at it all. I can't really help but to say I have a debit card which is never accepted when I try to use it online or over the phone. The bank won't accept there's anything wrong with it and the retailers keep telling me it's a bank error. The ironic thing is that I opened up this new account specifically for online and internet purchases and keep only a minimal balance in it as my old card was cloned a couple of times and my main account got wiped out. It's beyond useless because I can't even use it!

Thanks for that anjumanji.. I just don't understand what I'm meant to be doing? Does you card happen to be through HSBC as well?

Before I upgraded to the Visa Debit I had no issues at all.. Just don't know what to do..

I hate Visa debit, I have a couple of work colleagues who had it and I had to pay things for them on my switch/maestro card as their Visa debit was refused for a Sky payment and Holiday insurance for a diving holiday. I got the cash back from them but it's still annoying.

    Thanks Ashke,

I might just contact Visa Debit on their own, rather than going through my bank then.. It needs to be sorted, after all.

My card is through Nationwide but it is a Visa Debit, however my other card which was cloned is also a Visa Debit through Nationwide. They should be exactly the same but I have a feeling when the new one was created they did something different with the address layout. I don't know if this makes sense but when I tried to register my new card with paypal it kept getting rejected. I looked at the statement address for that card and the first line of the address was Mr + Mrs Anjumanji as was the 2nd line, so when I entered my address in that format eg: Mr + Mrs Anjumanji, Mr + Mrs Anjumanji, 654 xyz street, etc, it was finally accepted. But I still can't use it elsewhere so I've given up on it now.

    Anjumanji - that is AWFUL!!

I'm going to call Visa at lunch (wish me luck! lol) and then call my bank afterwards if they can't help. Then go down to H's bank, and put money across.

I just don't understand why it can't come through; H has a VIsa Debit as well, and that *seems* fine?

OK so a quick update- spent about an hour on the phone at lunch and managed to sort out a solution:

Had to pay for Sky on H's account, which meant going to the bank first and putting money in there, etc... THEN spoke to bank, and they're issuing me with a new card, because the other one, from what they could see, kept coming back with "link lost" for authorising the payments..

Sky is all sorted, and will be installed on Saturday afternoon! HOORAH!

But MY GOD, am I tired!! ?
