I'm partially deaf - well 50% deaf in low frequencies. I should really have a hearing aid but never got round to getting one and now I'm great at lip reading etc. I do think it is a pain for everyone else and I wonder what I am missing out on - really need to round to getting it sorted out!

Hi Elizabeth, welcome to hitched ?

I am in awe of SG45 - when I met her I had no clue at all that she was deaf, it wasnt until she posted in another thread that I learned about it. I have tried to lip read before and I am crap - its very hard - so I am genuinely in awe of anyone who can lipread

SG45 - in all honesty I would never had known, not a clue in the slightest

    X

I'm not deaf but just wanted to say hello to everyone! My mum works as an interpreter for deaf children, so i've picked up a bit of sign language over the years! ?

Hey there and welcome Smiley smile One of my closest buddies is deaf and we met online. I went to stay with her for a week and we had such a good laugh. We were out clubbin one night and we were sitting there drinking and i'm talking away to her but i'm actually shouting so I can hear myself over the music. She pipes up 'why are you shouting at me? I cant hear you y'know!' and I almost fell off my stool laffin at myself, of course she had been lip reading me all night and so I didnt need to shout at all, duhhhh. Shes coming up for my wedding and I cant wait to see her again as its been almost 6 years since we last saw one another Smiley smile

I think you're gonna have a great time with us nutters...er....brides Smiley smile

    Hey back again

I wear 2 hearing aids, having about 50% hearing in one ear and 45% in the other. With my hearing aids I have about 85% I lip read all the time

Anyway onto better stuff - weddingy stuff! What have you planned so far + when are you getting hitched?

    Welcome to hitched! ?

I'm not deaf and I can't sign...as much as I would love to learn I sadly haven't had the time to take a course. I love watching people sign, it facinates me...is it rude of me to watch? ?

Welcome to the nuthouse!...we really are a great bunch of people ?

Hi and welcome to Hitched! I too am partially deaf - 50% in both ears and although I have two aids, I get by pretty much all of the time by lip reading. I normally only wear them when I'm meeting people I don't know so that I don't miss anything! Everyone who knows me, knows to look at me when they speak. I have a special phone that whoops up the volume at home so that makes life much easier! I blame my deafness on all the years I went clubbing in my younger days standing next to loud speakers although it's probably a bit of old age too LOL!

Oooh, gonna look out for one of these ?

Just ready your post about your parents, a friend of mine is having the same problem with her mum not wanting to go to her wedding because she isn't getting married in a church, she is getting married in 5 months time and I still don't think it's been sorted yet but time will tell, I can't honestly see her mum stay away from her youngest daughters wedding.

There is always the option of getting married abroad and then having a blessing and a family getogether when you get back, a bit more money but something to think about ?

Hi and welcome to hitched! ?

I'm not Deaf, but my cousin is profoundly Deaf and uses BSL as her first language. As such I've been signing a few years, and can now swear pretty fluently! ?

She came to a family wedding a few years ago, and got on fabulously. We just made sure she got a seat where she could see the registrar and lipread what was going on. We also discovered it was very useful when she was at the bar and I wasn't!

Anyway, just wanted to say welcome to Hitched, and do what makes you and your fiancee happy!

Whatever you and your h2b decide it shouldn't matter what others think, say, do or don't do, as long as it's what you want and are happy.

My friend is just going ahead with getting married over here in a hotel, hopefully her mum will come round to the idea closer to the time, my friend isn't going to let it spoil her day, she's not the one that will be loosing out ?

    Hi,

I am not deaf but currently studying deaf studies at university!

I was just wondering how easy it was to plan your wedding.

I am thinking of training as a wedding planner and specialising in weddings for deaf/hard of hearing people in the future.

I was just wondering your opinions on whether you think many people would be interested in this, within the deaf comunity?

    thanks

This is a very old thread, but Elizabeth is still about and got married a few weeks ago.

I'm sure if she sees this then she'd be very happy to help out.

I was at her wedding and she had an interpreter signing at the church and during the speeches.

If she's about I'm sure she'll answer any questions you have Smiley smile

I have just set up a new forum specifically for any Brides or Grooms with any sort of mental or physical disability. This is because I photographed the wedding of a gorgeous Bride who has MND and I realised just how little information is out there for people facing challenges with planning. If anyone wants a look it is www.enabledweddings.org It is very, very new yet but I hope to be publicising and adding to it over the next few weeks so if anyone fancies joining, you would be more than welcome!
