''You May Now Kiss The Bride''

Rizzo, 10 November, 2010 at 12:43 Posted on Planning 0 51

Is anyone else dreading what happens next?

I hate being in PDofA and even thought it's my wedding day, I'll still be dreading it.

What are you planning on doing for your first kiss? Open mouthed? Tight mouth? Church tongue? Porno tongue? ?

Haha I am going to get a little embaressed by it I think especially in front of the Vicar.

We have practised a little kiss already, haha, which is what i'd give to OH as he is leaving the house in a rush! We plan to rush off for 15mins alone before we enter the reception venue and so we will have a nice big kiss then when it's just us~!

I know it's "just another old tradition" but why exactly do you need permission from anyone to kiss your partner at that point, or any point, during the ceremony?

Its not giving permission more 'wrapping the ceremony up', finishing it off a bit more romantically and letting everyone know its all done........

    ha ha at 'porno kiss'!!

ooo I couldnt do tongues in front of my parents!!

Jesus, why do you have to question everything? When your registrar says "AJ repeat after me" or "You may now kiss the bride" etc are you going to just say "I don't need your permission, I'll do what I want" a throw a strop?

*shrugs* I like traditions. What would you much rather they say? 'I now prounce you man and wife, now off you go and get drunk'?

FFS another simple straightforward question and I get an arsey answer.

I was asking as to the origins of the tradition, that's all. Like most things regarding wedding tradition and etiquette, they are just 'expected to happen' and often with no explanation as to why.

As more and more people move away from 'traditional' ceremonies and make them their own, some things get dropped, some things remain legal requirements, and I was simply asking about it.

If you think this is a 'stroppy post' perhaps you should ask yourself why.

In Roman times a kiss would be used to represent the legal bond that sealed contracts. I suspect it harks back to that day and it would have started as a gentle reminder from a pastor that you ought to formally seal the deal.

As well all know, in Western culture, the woman was always seen as a chattel which is why he kisses his bride, rather than the other way around.

    Nothing more than that.

OMG that does sound awful - just to make it clear, I mean 15 mins to have a chat, a cuddle, giggle, a nice drink and maybe record a personal message for our video of how we're feeling so that it's recorded forever... Not THAT.. **Blushing going on over here**

Did anyone see Roxy and Shaun's wedding in Eastenders? I'm pretty sure they were up to no good in the Registry office before the service... Interesting idea!!

They dont always say it now though - none of the weddings I went to this year had the 'you may now kiss the bride' moment. I went to 3 church weddings over the summer and none of them had this bit in the service ☹️

We're getting married in a Catholic church, and apparently there is no "I now pronounce you husband and wife" or "You may now kiss the bride". How miserable, I was looking forward to a little smooch with new husband! No practising for me then...

    xx

just read through all the paperwork from our registrar and it says "we can choose do we want to kiss, have the audience cheer and applaud? or they can encourage guests to congratulate us in anyway we like, they are happy within reason to do whatever we wish to finish the service"

as much as i will just want to die doing the kiss-it wouldnt feel right not doing it!

This is a biggie for us. The OH is looking forward to the kiss and its a huge must have moment. But I come from a back ground where if theres a kiss in a movie the channels was changed or if we're watching a bollywood movies...just as they are about to kiss it changes to a waterfall...or flowers raining down..you get the idea. I hate to deprive OH of something this important but if we do ...I'll be so unconfortable. Still trying to think of a compromise

I've just read through our paperwork and there's no mention of it. It says that we will be named as H&W but no mention of the kiss. Yes!

I bet some bugger will make us pose for a kiss though.

Oh at our engagement party we had to pose for a kiss, but my silly aunt kept missing it so we had to do it a few times. Tough times...

The kiss in the church is different though, sounds corny but it kind of 'seals the deal' and shows people we're actually married. I've been to church ceremonies where there has been no announcement of being Husband and Wife and no kissing and the congregation get quite confused when the Priest just keeps going with the mass.

    xx

It doesn't need to be a full-on tongue wrestle - do none of you ever give your OH a quick kiss when other people are around?

Our vicar raised this at the weekend. It's not actually written anywhere in the service that you kiss the bride. He ends the marriage by getting a round of applause and will whisper to us that that might be a nice time to kiss if we want to. I like that. No pressure! Oh, and it will def be a closed mouth no tongue. My ban will be there! Although I'm tempted by the high five low give top gun combo. Maybe a man hug with back patting would do.
