Following on from the mnemonics used to remember how to spell "necessary"... My best mnemonic is Can I Kill Shakin' Stevens For Making Oxo. Unlimited credit to anyone who can guess what it's a mnemonic for....* Anyone else use mnemonics? Maybe a guessing game? *It's a homemade one so it won't show...

Technically, there are no separate colours of the rainbow. A rainbow is a gradual spectrum of wavelength changes that are subjectively perceived as different colours by our sensory systems but only for convenience. Are red and orange separate colours? Where on the visible light spectrum does that separation occur? How do you know everyone else sees the sane two colours at the same point of separation?

I can't get the cranial nerves one in my head, but use the "some lovers..." one loads. There's a "sexy Lucy..." one that I can never remember and is a bit naughtier!

Another one from my junior school violin playing days is "Elephants Are Dark Grey" (the strings)

I was taught to spell Because as Birds Eat Crumbs After Uncle Stops Eating - even now I find my self repeating it when ever I have to spell it.

We weren't taught all that many at school, really, certainly not for spellings etc. We used

    Never East Shredded Wheat

Every Good Boy Deserves Football and FACE for the 'spaces'

    and the trig

    Silly Old Harry

    Caught A Herring

    Trawling Off Afghanistan

(and it was incredibly useful when I chose a maths module as part of my OU degree recently! ? )

Didn't know the planets one, so have spent the last 5 minutes trying to memorise it - every day's a school day!

I know this is not a Mnemonic, but at school we were shown a simple way of remembering our nine times tables. If you hold your hands out in front of you and say you want to know what 9 x 3 is, then put your middle finger down on your left hand. You'll have 2 fingers to the left and 7 to the right and the answer is 27!

Ukele is "My Dog Has Fleas"

One from my school days... Onomatopoeia.. Onomatpoeia ends in a....the last four words first letter gives you the spelling of the difficult part of the word which is the last 4 letters.

Apparently it was a melodic pitch (whatever that is) taught to my mother by some stage act that used ukeles as an easy way to tune the 4 strings. I was always pretty tone deaf so it was lost on me.....
