Your name on your front door

I was wondering how many people here have a name plate on or by their front door. We've never bothered with one - when we moved in to our flat we weren't even engaged and having two names on the door seemed daft. I was wondering how many people here have a name plate on or by their front door. We've never bothered with one - when we moved in to our flat we weren't even engaged and having two names on the door seemed daft. When we got married we just never got round to it, it was never very high on our list of things to do with two children on the way.

My MIL thinks this is very very strange. She can't understand when we haven't got our name on the door. I think she thinks either I'm ashamed of my new name (I'm not!) or we're hiding from debt collectors! Now we've moved house, it seems logical to get a name plate as we'll be here a while. But the fact that MIL goes on and on about it puts me off! ? I know I'm being silly about it, but she asks EVERY time she visits (she comments 'no name on the door yet I see. That. Is. Ridiculous.' And she shakes her head and tuts.

To make matters worse, one of MIL relatives dropped by to see us, but because there was no name on the door, she left without even knocking! (this is despite the fact that she had the right address in her hand and our car, which she sold us, was outside!) Surely that's bonkers! Who'd do that? Just knock on the door and apologise if you've got the wrong house!

So a quick straw poll, please. Name plate or no name plate? And does it make us look like bailiff dodgers if we haven't got one?

I'm another one who has never seen, or heard of, people having their name by the front door. I thought those places that did the plaques did house names rather than an individual's name.

We have a nameplate (initials and both our surnames), and we do live in a block of flats. Despite having a number on the door we regularly (and still do to some extent) get mail for a different flat or even another block. Having our names on the door has stopped this, at least by a significant amount. I think it's to do with the not-obvious numbering if the flats (example: 2/4 is Block 2 Flat 4... not Flat 4 of Block 2); we also don't seem to have posties that stay in the area for a particularly long time.

So it's helpful for that Smiley smile For us anyway.

ETA: Never heard of people in houses or MOST flats having nameplates though, unless it's a named house for ITS name.

I don't see how name plates are the same as house names though? Two entirely different kettles of fish, imo

I'm another Scot who thinks it's weird - unless in flats where it's not obvious how the inner doors match up to the buzzers/house numbers.

I can't see who it was but the postie telling you to put your name up is a bl00dy cheek - the Royal Mail's policy is to deliver to the address not the person's name so it's completely pointless.

Its really common around where I used to live amongst the Pakistani community. They nearly all have nameplates on their house or even worked into the wrought iron gates. Very interesting how cultures differ isn't it!

We have a house name (a twee one ?) but we've ended up having to use it as there are two streets in our area that are one letter different so its easier for mail

We've got one - it was one of the first things we did when we moved in ?

In my defence we do live in a tenement and there's no standard numbering system, so our flat is known as both 4 and 2F2.

It never occurred to me that it was twee - it does just have our surname though (no Jack Russells or flowery fonts!)

We don't and never have (even when we lived in a flat).

My mum does though, and I've never thought to ask her why.

Really odd - would never consider one unless I was a dentist working out of my house!

If my MIL commented on it every time, I would deliberately not put one up just to annoy her ?

We have one - plain nameplate on door_and always have.. but have until now always lived in a tenement as well. I have actually had a look around my neighbours in our square and nearly all have one as well.

Maybe its a local thing here - or our posties cant read numbers !!!!!!
