To entourage or not to entourage?

Is it a “must” to have bridesmaids and entourage? And who pays for it? Is it solely the bride?
RSVP deadline been and gone and hardly any replies :(

We sent out our evening invitations right at the beginning of July with a deadline of 1st August for the rsvps. Wedding is in November but we wanted numbers quite early to sort stuff out plus people...
