8 days residence in different county to give notice

Linda, 10 July, 2022 at 14:52 Posted on Planning 0 26
We live in greater Manchester but are planning to get married in Cumbria. We're reading about giving notice in Cumbria and it says you have to be resident for 8 nights to give notice.
So if you're getting married in any county except your own you have to stay there for 8 nights first? Please help

As I understand it, you give notice where you live not where you get married. That’s what we did anyway - we gave notice in Bristol (where we live) and got married in Somerset. When you book the registrar, they will be able to confirm (or may have a faq on their website).

Did you not have to stay in Somerset for 8 nights? That's what the government and council website says

No, We gave notice at our local register office and they dealt with Somerset for us (well, we booked and paid for registrar etc but the notice side of things was sorted). Gov.uk confirms and even says you and FH can even give notice in separate places if you don’t live together https://www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-partnerships/give-notice

I agree with Jane, we gave notice a few weeks ago and everything I read on our council's website sounds like you give notice where you live, no matter where you are getting married. So you will contact Cumbria to book your registrar for the day/time/place needed and then attend a registry office in Manchester to give notice.

You give notice in the borough you pay your council tax to, (where you live) you book and pay for registrar services in the are you are getting married. Once you have given notice your borough will post on the national database and that goes to the registrar office of where you are actually get Ng mart ed. The residency pat yrefers to where you give notice, which is where you live. The 8 days is normally for overseas nationals who are not UK residents

Yeah, you give notice to the County you pay tax to, and you book pay fees etc. Goes on database for at least 28 days.
My partner was under a different county but we marrying in my county.
Isn't the 8 days for those overseas? Best of luck x

Thanks everyone for the replies, this is a massive relief and I appreciate your help. I'm baffled as to why our wedding planner said we'd have to live in cumbria for 8 nights!

Hi Michelle, don't worry, you just give notice in your own town and just book the registrar in the county where you want to get married. I just booked my registrar in Cumbria and I'll give notice in my home town in a few months x Cost £680 for the registrar though!!

All the advice above was correct

That’s a tricky situation! It’s always good to double-check the rules before making plans. I found a really helpful resource for checking details about local procedures through Riverside Court Records , which made everything much clearer for me. Staying informed about requirements like residency really saves a lot of stress. Hopefully, this helps you plan your notice period smoothly!
