Advice - chapped lips

Mellow_Yellow, 26 January, 2012 at 08:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

I guess this is what you would call it but it's really really bad!

I've never suffered from anything like this before, but it's been on and off for months now. It flares up, to the point that my lips are bleeding, and the skin around my lips is actually stingy and painful - and then I just wake up one morning and it's gone.

I've been monitoring it and I think it's stress related, but there's not much I can do about that for now. In the meantime, is there anything other than vaseline that might help - it's becoming unbearable. ☹️

Blisteze do a product called relief cream, it's often in the pharmacy section rather than the lip balm section in boots. It tingles when you put it in, it always works for me, normally clears up within a day or two.

I find Vaseline makes it worse.

Have you tried the Blistex cream? That works for me.

Yes this is what you want - in a white and blue tube with a red lid. They do differnt types like normal lipbalms, but you want specifically the Relief Cream, it's really great. In between times when your lips are so bad, I'd reccommend Carmex lipbalm.

I'm another one who finds Vaseline or any regular lipbalm sticks makes it worse. I now use yellow soft paraffin after a doctor gave me a tube when I was working on the wards and it is a miracle - looks like Vaseline but keeps my lips nicely hydrated and if I have a cold, a little bit of this on my nose overnight and I don't get the peeling I used to. You have to get it from the pharmacy (but not on prescription) and they might need to order it in but I now have an enormous pot of it which will last me forever and I put a small bit into an old cleaned Vaseline tin so I can always have it with me.

I've never had them really bad but I find with chapped lips, the EA 8 hour lip balm is good. Sounds like you might need something a bit more hard core though.

I use carmex in the pot as the carmex in a tube dries my lips ?

Avoid anything with petroleum in it i.e vaseline as it just makes it worse.

The reason petroleum-based products don't work on chapped lips is that they are intended to be used as a barrier, rather than to hydrate. It's fine if you want to prevent chapped lips because it will lock in moisture, but once they're chapped, you need a moisturiser. Whenever I have residual handcream or facecream on my hands, I always rub it onto my lips (and my elbows).

I think different products work for different people so you need to find one that works for you, as Footlong said I would go for something else besides vaseline. I have suffered with chapped lips for as long as I can remember and the only thing that works for me is 'Lypsyl', it's only 99p or so from wilkos/pharmacies but it works.

I get cracks at the side of my mouth and use Blisteze on them, so I put it on the skin round my lips too. Sound like things like Vaselene would definately make his problem worse. You could try blisteze, it probably would help a lot, the only thing is you have to keep putting it on constantly, would he do that/let you do it?

And vaseline can actually prevent you body from working to replace moisture. I recommend Blisteze too - great stuff, you can use it on your lips and sore nose, but just don't get it too near your eyes. I like Palmer's cocoa butter lip balm too.

Agree with others try Blistex it is really good. Also a little Sudocream around your lips will help sooth the surrounding skin probably best not on your actual lips though, i think it is a miracle cream helps with pretty much everything.
