I don't know about the injection, but on the actual pill you have to use extra protection whilst taking the antibiotics and for 7 days after finishing the course.

    According to FPA website:

Can anything make the injection less effective?

While the injection is working nothing will make it less effective. Injectable contraception is not affected by:

    • prescribed medicines, including any kind of antibiotics, or any medicines which you buy over the counter at a pharmacy in the UK
    • diarrhoea
    • vomiting

Yup, one of the benefits of the injection is it's not affected by any other medications.

I was on the pill injection for over 10 years - had a fair few antibiotics during that time and had sex and didn't get pregnant. I was told it did not effect the injection.

    Hope that reassures you.

Slightly OT but I've know two people to get pregnant whilst on the injection. They weren't on antibiotics at the time as far as I know. Does it have a lower success rate than the pill? I was thinking of having it but I'm not so sure now.

No the injection is much more effective than the pill. Perfect use failure rate 0.3% typical use slightly higher around 2% depending on which study you read (typical use includes people who have their injections late). So 2 in 100 couples will get pregnant in a year using the injection.

The pill's perfect use failure rate is about 0.5% and typical failure rate 8% (ie 8 in 100 couples will get pregnant in a year using the pill).

The most effective is the subdermal implant (Implanon) which has a 0.3% typical use failure rate. (ie only 3 in a 1000 accidental pregnancies over a year). If you get on well with Depo, then you can swap to implanon after the first injection or indeed any time. It lasts for 3 years.

I kind of suggested it to my GP last week (started getting migraines on Yasmin) and he said he wouldn't receommend it- he said if you do want to start a family it can take quite some time after your last injection before you are fertile- up to a year? was quite surprised by that.

Even so, none of my friends who have had it have a good thing to say about it and my GP wasn't keen either so he changed my pill.

What a daft thing to say. There is no 100% effective form of contraception exept total abstinence. Even sterilisation and vasectomy have failure rates.

Yes I would agree - Depo not appropriate if you're planning on TTC in the next year or so, as there's a delay in return to fertility. Is it Cerazette you're on now? No oestrogen - so much safer for migraineuses.

cerazette, yep. It seems to be going OK. I am loving the idea of no periods. I have a history of unexplained bleeding though so GP has asked me to keep an eye out.

I heart my GP. Unfortunatley, clearly so does the rest of Pimlico as he's usually booked up three weeks in advance but you can manage too see other GPs at the practise within 24 hours ?
