Any ideas how to remove nail extensions?

SAM83, 23 April, 2008 at 14:51 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 19

Had some gel nail extensions done on Saturday and I hate them. They are too long and are annoying me. I have poked myself in the eye god knows how many times and keep catching them on things which are yanking my own nail and hurting ☹️!]

Any ideas how I remove them? They shop I had them done in is closed today so cant ask there.

Thanks

You use an acetone based nail polish remover, I guess you soak them in it. I just peeled mine off [:I]

I know you can get acrylics off by soaking them in acetone. Would that work with gel ones perhaps?

You can actually buy a bottle of acetone form the chemists for a few quid. Much easier than using acetone based polish remover ?

Sorry I read it properly now, gel ones. I don't know if acetone works with gel. I don't think it does. Don't they file them off.

You can pick them off but I wouldn't advise it as you will take the top of your own nail off and if they're new they will probably be pretty tough. I'm guessing it's the same as acetone and you just soak them off in acetetone nail varnish.

Gel's need to be filed off!

Please dont let anyone do this with electric tools. it needs to be done really gently.

I would go back to where you had them done and ask them to make the shorter for you so they arent as much of a 'hazard' to you.

    Thanks everyone.

Will ring them tomorrow and see what they say - I think I remember seeing a sign saying they remove them for £25. Will get some acetone later from chemist.

So do they come off in time (if I wanted to keep them on) or would they still have to be removed?

    ?

It would be much easier to go to a salon to have them soaked off,any salon will soak them off for you,it doesnt have to be the salon you had them done at.
We soak loads off, costs about £10,depends where you live obviously.
But if you want to do it yourself it has to be pure acetone, not nail varnish remover.
    You have to be patient can take about 45 mins, dont pick at them,just file with quite a rough emery board{be careful not to file the natural nail}

Why dont you just file them shorter??

I've had mine done for years, when mine get to long the annoy me to and i scrash myself alot, I couldnt do with out them now (my own nails break so easy)

If you really dont want them on, go back to where you had them done

They grow out,you get a gap at the base of the nail where you would need them infilling.x

Most gels need to be filed off, it's only certain gels that acetone works with.

You really shouldn't try and remove them yourself, you will damage your own nails. Go and speak to the salon tomorrow and see what they say. If it's more cos they're too long, ask them to file them down for you.

All extensions take a while to get used to. I personally hate not having mine on now!

Acetone DOES remove gel. Just like i said before you have to be patient.
Go to a salon, much easier.?

I have had gel extensions and I currently have gel overlays. Do this :

Get a bottle of acetone from the pharmacy
    Boil water in a kettle
Pour acetone into a smallish glass bowl and put this bowl into a bigger bowl and pour the water into the bigger bowl so that it heats the acetone up. You need to get a big bottle of acetone because the heat makes the acetone evaporate quite quickly.
Soak your nails in the acetone for at least 10 minutes, and then GENTLY, scrape the residue off your own nails. DON'T gouge the stuff off - it may take up to half an hour to get the gel off.
You dont have to heat the acetone, it just works faster if you do.

Thanks. Ok will leave it until I speak to them tomorrow.

They are just too long for me (I dont have any nails and these are too big for me) and I did ask him to cut them shorter when I had them done but he already thought they were too short and refused, said they wouldnt look as good.

Could I file them shorter myself do you think or is this a no go?

Mine were Bio Gel Sculptures and although the lady said that they should be removed by her she did say that acetone could be used to remove them [shrug]

You can certainly file them down though. I find they get to look dirty really quickly unless you had a coloured one.

This is another thing too. I have french polish type ones (with the white tips) and they look grubby and dirty underneath them.

Have dug out some nail files so will have a go later.
