Anyone with IBS?

DaffyB, 18 August, 2011 at 10:49 Posted on Planning 0 13

Does anyone else suffer from IBS? And how do you plan on preventing it from interfering with your day?

I ask because we went to my brother's wedding at the weekend and after eating the 3 course meal I felt so bloated and horrible all evening that I didn't feel like dancing and I don't want to be like that on my wedding day. I really want to have a traditional wedding breakfast but I know that if I eat a 3 course meal I'll regret it. And I think I'll be too busy thinking about other things and talking to people to limit what I eat, I'll probably find myself looking at my empty plate and wondering where it all went. I was thinking maybe I'll try to eat a light meal before the wedding so I'm not too hungry by the time we get food. And ask if they can do me a lighter version for the breakfast, so the amount on my plate is limited.

I think my main triggers are stress, large meals, and fizzy drinks/alcohol. Obviously there is going to be quite a bit of stress surrounding the day and I want to be able to have some alcohol. Maybe I'm kidding myself that I can avoid problems.

I also suffer with IBS. I know what foods trigger it so have completely avoided those in the meal. You are right, stress and alcohol are huge triggers - I have got myself stressed out this week with the wedding and guess what, yep its flared up. Not alot I can do, I figure I will just take it as it comes and hopefully the less I worry about it, the less problem i'll have! ?

I have mild IBS and the worst trigger for me is stress - I had at least 3 bouts of it in the last few weeks before the wedding and it isnt very nice I was also worrying about it kicking off on the day - Alas it didnt. I dont think you need to worry about over eating I think the majority of brides have a limited appetite but even if you do eat your 3 course meal and all of it providing you eat a mothful ata time and allow time for the food to digest you should be ok - take some green tea if works wonders for me and I know alot of Hitchers use it - you could have a cup with your meal. Try not to worry/think about it as that in itself can trigger it off.

Is it worth speaking to your doctor about it to see if there is any other medication you may be able to take? I take peppermint oil capsules when I've got cramps and bloating and they really help. We'll also be choosing our food around my IBS too - no creamy sauces with our chicken! Easier said than done, I know, but as stress is a trigger, try not to worry about it too much as it will only heighten your stress levels. Fingers crossed you will be on such a high you'll have no problems at all.

I've been to the doctors about it and they've done tests to prove that its not wheat or dairy that cause my problems. They say theres not much else they can do. I take buscopan which does often help. At the weekend I took the maximum of 4 tablets during the day which helped a little but still left me feeling really bloated and horrible. I also drink peppermint tea and I've recently started having an actimel a day to see if that will help. I try to avoid onions and spicy food as these seem to make it worse but even so eating a big meal out always affects me. the majority of the time I'm fine and cope well with it, it's just the occasions when I go out and eat a big meal that are a problem, and I think its worse if the meal is high in fat.

    Yes, me.

I got through the wedding without serious bloating by having only one small glass of alcohol all day (abstemious me!), drinking water instead and being very careful what I ate (avoided the evening buffet altogether). I still managed some deep fried brie and cranberry sauce though!

Was nowhere near as bad I can sometimes get (bloating a real problem, I look 6 months pregnant most evenings).

    Hope you're ok.

I used to suffer from it badly and when I had a caesarian my bowel stopped working, leading to emergency surgery and since then just minor twinges. i recently read that just 10 sit ups a day can help. if you suffer bouts of constipation with it lactulose can help.

    Hello

Ive got really chronic ibs and know what foods trigger it and its moslty foods that I love like pasta lol! Anyways we will be avoiding these foods on our wedding day. It is also anything soaked in oil so I will be careful about what im eating on the morning!

I normally take peppermint capsules which you can buy in the chemist or bucopan which helps but I had a bad stomach on holiday and my dad gave me one immodium tablet which stopped the pain and needing the toilet but then gave me constipation so not sure whats worse!

I know its stressful leading up to your wedding but you just need to relax and enjoy the day and hopefully that will be able to assist you.

One of my bridesmaids also has it so its going to be mental for us 2 haha!

Im lucky that alcohol doesnt trigger mine!

Im prescribed mebeverine and alverine citrate by my doctor. I have flare ups when Im stressed out so recently it has been a nightmare, wedding planning, university deadlines and trying to arrange H2B moving to the North. I plan on trying to keep my diet to what I know works for me, we are having a buffet so I know what food i can eat and what i cant. I no longer drink alcohol as that also kicks it off so I will drink juice or water. My H2B also suffers with IBS although his is worse than mine, he has been suffering for 7 years Smiley sad so Im fortunate in that when I say I feel ill and its my IBS he knows exactly what I need to make me feel better.

Hi, I have IBS, badly, to help improve mine i changed my diet, cut out my trigger foods, and take medication from the docs, called spasmonal 3 times a day, 20mins before food, they are strong and help alot, i take them everyday.

I no longer eat any processed food, everything is fresh and that had helped.

Stress is a big cause, guess thats something hard to avoid....
