1st dance songs

claire_91, 7 September, 2012 at 14:10 Posted on Planning 0 43

I've just been thinking through some of the smaller details of the day and was wondering how you go about choosing the 1st dance song if you as a couple have "our song" if you know what I mean. How have you decided and what are you having?

We aren't having one! We went through it and through it, we decided we wanted something upbeat because clumsily mooching around the dancefloor to "Everything I Do" wasn't us (that is not to say those who would like this are in the wrong), then I decided I wanted agadoo, then we decided the whole concept of hanging around till whatever time to do something that made us feel uncomfortable wasn't the way forward so we sacked it off entirely. We have thought about asking the DJ to ask everyone to join us on the dancefloor sort of like a group firts dance but haven't decided.

This post is of absolutely no help at all really is it?

We had Hotel Yorba by The White Stripes, so not traditional in any way. We agreed with the DJ that it wouldn't be a set time, that he should juts announce it and play it when he thought it appropriate i.e. when most people were dancing, neither of us were in the loo, when it fitted into the run of music etc. We'd used some of the lyrics on our invitations so everyone knew it was "our song" and moved away to give us space on our own (we only had a little dance floor so only a little circle to dance in). We just jumped around a lot.

We chose ours earlier this year. We are having 'As the word falls down' from the Jim Henson 80s movie Labyrinth.

It just came to us that we both love that song. & are kids at heart. ?

After much deliberation I think we have chosen ours as Jason Mraz: I wont give up.

It isnt completely set in stone, if something else comes up in the next few months and we like it better then we will choose something new.

ETA: I stumbled upon the song here, thought it was perfect, he said no, was adamant he wanted a female artist. Then after much persuasion I think hes finally got how perfect it is for a first dance. We needed something slow because there was no way I was doing some crazy dance so I just researched and researched.

We've got Bruno Mars - Just the Way you Are - we have always said from the beginning of our relationship if we were ever to get married that would be our first dance song!

This is mine too. Didn't take much deliberating though. OH had just started working away again and it came on the radio on my way home from work back to my empty house and I cried! Ha ha, such a wuss. About 6 weeks later he came home from work telling me about this amazing song he heard that was perfect for us, but he couldn't remember the name, words, tune or artist. Very helpful as usual. He eventually remembered a few vague words/phrases and I realised he meant the one I'd already picked Smiley smile

We didn't have one, instead we just had the band play tunes we wanted that meant something to us so we had lots of personal somgs if that makes sense? I do wish we had had one now though but I didn't want to do it then!

Although my mum did arrange for them to play slipping through my fingers (if you've seen mamma mia its the one when she's getting dressed for the wedding)

My OH is chosing ours, it's one of the "jobs" he wants for the wedding. at the moment he's leaning towards ELbow "one day like this".....we dont really have a "song" but want something we both like and feel we can shuffle in some sort of rythm to before we drag others up....x

Ours is a 'typical' first dance song but has a lot of meaning to us... it's going to be Aerosmith - I dont wanna miss a thing, as we have spent the past 3 years living in seperate countries due to his army posting in Germany, and us getting married means we can finally live together, and no longer miss a thing about each other! Smiley smile xxx

Nope I think all of the lyrics are appropriate...some are a little bit mushy for us but the whole not giving up is appropriate which to me is the point of the song.

I do have a feeling the song was based on a breakup but even if it is it doesnt matter as the lyrics fit with a current relationship and especially a newly married couple.

Not sure on our exit, my 2 favourites are Orson: Happiness and Nickelback: Never going to be alone

For signing the register I like The Verve: Lucky Man, it is H2B's favourite song and very appropriate ? Is one enough or do we need 2?

    Hi Claire,

I just thought back on my first dance and how we picked it. I wrote a long article on my blog after the wedding but I'll copy in here the most important stuff.

Not too fast, not too slow

Your song should not be too fast. Try a few times to dance with your partner through the whole song. Do it in a big room that is similar to the dance floor at your venue. I danced to a few tunes myself (alone), and when I felt they worked I asked my partner to try it together. Sometimes the song seemed to be slow enough when just listening or dancing alone, but with a partner that can be different. Four feet have to coordinated! Also, your song should not be too slow, or you won’t be able to ‘flow’ elegantly through the room.

If your heart is set on a song but the timing does not work, have it slowed down or go faster by a DJ or find a computer program to do it for you.

Three minutes can be a long time

Usually indie rock songs are not much longer than three minutes. That sounds short, but it isn’t. If the dance takes too long, people will get bored. They will have drunk a little already, might be ‘full’ from the buffet and tired from standing around. A long song can also be too long for you, the couple. You won’t believe how long one minute can be if you only know so many moves, and everyone is staring at you. We danced only 1-2 minutes, then the DJ faded it out and asked everyone on the dance floor.

Our song was: Blue Eyes by Cary Brothers. I love the lyrics, and it works to dance it like a Waltz. My husband didn't particularly care, but I loved the song and it was important to me. I found it by going through my itunes library checking for emotional songs that are a Waltz. I also started noticing on the radio or when watching movies when a nice song came up and put it on my list.

Dance lessons and DJ: There are lots of tips on websites of brides magazines that urge you to invest in a DJ and dance lessons. It’s more important to spend time on picking a song and trying it out. Have a musical friend help you. We paid for a DJ because our venue had no hi fi system and most friends traveled from abroad and could not bring any equipment. We asked a dance teacher (of a course we did anyways before even being engaged) to give us two lessons to time the song.

I'm planning to make a full list of the songs I had on my blog, but what comes to mind right now is also Let it be me by Ray LaMontagne, although it might a tiny little bit slow.

    I hope this helps you!

We're not having an official first dance as neither of us feel comfortable dancing like that, particularly in front of our friends and family. But we are going to do the dance from Pulp Fiction at some point. Will definitely need some Danish schnapps to give me the balls to do that.

We're having Elbow as we come out of the church, hopefully performed by the choir - it's our song and have known since the first time we heard it that it would be played on our wedding day

For our first dance we have been deliberating for months. Current top two is 'I Luv U' by The Ordinary Boys and 'She Is Love' by Oasis (which is also one of our readings)

We have so many songs that we love as a couple, but our day is going to be full of music with a choir at the church, an acoustic guitarist at the reception and a 3 piece band in the evening - so we should hopefully be able to squeeze in all our faves as requests. It's choosing just one for the first dance that is the hard bit!!

Ours is Faithfully, its originally by journey but not decided whether to have the glee version or not because we're both glee fans ? and it has a female part aswell.

I spent alot of time working away and the lyrics sum up how hard it was but how we got through it and I think the line "I'm forever yours, faithfully" is perfect for the wedding commmitment.

Last night we went through a million songs, but settled on Bee Gees, how deep is your love. I prefer it to Take That version.

Its really hard to pick something you can dance to that also has meaning and will stand the test of time.

We had Queens "You're my best friend" because we didn't want anything too slow so that we could move a bit, H could twirl me round etc, its not too cheesy and the lyrics are very fitting to us!

We had In The Mood by Glenn Miller. Its upbeat and fun, and we chose it for a few reasons. We're not a lovey dovey PDA type couple and so a slow dance would have just been utterly excruciating for us. Also one of my Grandad's favourite musicians was Glenn Miller and its of our grandparent's generation which was sentimental to us. And the really geeky bit: It was on one of our favourite episodes of Torchwood, and we thought it would be nice to be reminded every time we heard it on TV or something similar, but unusual enough as a first dance to be original-ish. It was fun to dance to. I'm really glad we chose it and everyone else thought it was brilliant.
