6 months to go and still no venue.....

Sparkles82, 25 September, 2012 at 11:28 Posted on Planning 0 12

I didnt think we were being particularly picky, especially since we are on a tight budget, but it would appear that our demands are too much!!

All we want is Fish & Chips, an arrival drink, a drink for the toasts and then a buffet of bacon/sausage sandwiches.

I keep getting told again and again that its not possible... except for one venue who want to charge me £35 per head for fish & chips, and another whose wedding co-ordinator turned out to be totally crap and unfriendly but will only charge £12 per head.

I am now debating... do I take a risk that misery guts wedding co-ordinator is having a bad few days, and our wedding will be fine in her capable, cheap hands.

Do I forget the idea of having fish and chips.

Do I beg, borrow and steal and raise the £35 per head somehow....

I am panicking now, it is 6 months away...............

How many people are you having?

I'm no where near you so can't suggest any venues but some other people might know.

I agree rugby club/bowling club type places can be a cheap option. Does your local council hire out venues?

I would look at somewhere else for the reception, somewhere that allows you to use your own caterers perhaps?

Or maybe meet with the not-so-great wedding co-ordinator again, give her a 2nd chance to chat through things, think of some questions etc. and see what she is like. She could of just had a lot on (which I know, when you are in the service industry, doesnt ok her to be miserable, but still....)

If she is still a no go, I would look elsewhere.

Yep, definitely look for another venue that allows own caterers, perhaps a barn / hall / club type place. Otherwise as others have mentioned it might be worth giving the wedding co-ordinator a second chance. After all, she must be good at something!

Good luck in finding somewhere and having what you want.

Sort of on topic... my wedding co-ordinator at my venue is utterly rubbish.... but to be honest, there isn't all that much I need her for - just yes or no's

And with mine, I'm hoping she'll start being helpful when it gets nearer to the date (getting married at the end of April)... mine just doesnt seem to think there's a rush or anything

Sadly most venues simply will not have the capacity to make fish and chips on mass for a wedding without the result being a soggy horrible mess..From my experience the common commerical fryer most venues have will only be able to cook 2/3 pieces of fish at a time (depending on size) and most kitchens usually have 2-4 fryers so you can imagine what the first piece of cooked fish is like by the time the last piece of fish and the chips are cooked for larger numbers assuming you want everyone to sit down and be served at the same time.....The other option maybe to have a fish and chip van who can cook to order as people queue or maybe have your reception in a fish restaurant that have specialish fryers like the chippys.

Yes, we got told this by a couple of venues, we are going to send out a menu choice for people to rsvp with.

We are having around 40 for dinner and a choice of fish and chips or steak and ale pie or a veggie dish so hopefully the choices will be spread out enough...!

Agree with the others about finding somewhere that you can have to use your own catering as that will give you much more flexibility- good luck!

I agree with trying a more DIY approach. Maybe getting a marquee set up somewhere and getting a fish and chip van?

I like this idea! It could be quite fun too for guests to go to the van and chose what they want. Quite a few venues we went to didn't have in-house caterers so hopefully you'll be able to find something. Fingers crossed for you.

Is there a particular reason why it needs to be fish and chips? Have you considered a BBQ or hog roast instead where this seems to be more commonly catered for weddings.
