A tip to those who have nearly all their wedding stuff on their computer!

Chedi, 16 September, 2012 at 12:46 Posted on Planning 0 13

Back it up! and back it up some more!

I broke my internal hard drive yesterday on my laptop... and have lost everything ? Luckily I have a friend whos good with computers so has put one of his spare hard drives in so I've still got a laptop - with very basic windows 7 (just has no microsoft suite or windows live or any programs apart from internet explorer, some free games, and paint and notepad)

This is wedding budget - which is pretty depressing, as I'd done so many things with it - and it has all the dates that everyone needed to be paid by as well!

Also, the list of music we were going to narrow down for the ceremony. The readings as well. The wording for the invitations. My moodboards I'd done via paint. Table plan ideas. Oh and guest list! Split into day and evening, and then possible bump-ups on the evening.

Thankfully somethings I emailed mum so shes going to find what shes got, but I'm also a bit annoyed as its also got our house account budgetting on there, and thats taken me many months of updating to budget the right amounts, and loads of photos too! I put a lot of my photos on facebook, so have some on there, and still have loads on my old phone which I never cleared, so I have lost everything - but there are some I've permanantly lost!

Yikes i had a very lucky escape with my laptop last month when it decided it just did not want to turn on and stay on, luckily it did in the end long enough to stick my portable hard drive in and get everything i needed off!

Oh poor you ! I'm a bit of a technophobe so all my notes are in a notebook, the planner is the one on here ,and the only thing I have kept on it are little uploaded pics of stuff I like. i had the same problem as funkyjames- my computer wouldn't switch and stay on, I now have a new one but have written all my info down in a notebook-just in case !

Oh what a nightmare, I hope the items your mum has will help get you back on track.

I've recently started using Dropbox for all my wedding stuff just in case anything happens it. As it's on online solution (and free for 2Gb storage but you can pay for more if needed) I can access it easily from anywhere. It's just like another folder on my pc but can access it on any other computer, my phone etc. It's fabulous!

    Oh no!

I hope your mum has copies of all the most important / difficult to replicate stuff. I use google drive for everything like that. It's great be ause you can access and edit from any computer, even iPad!

Is ther any chance of a techie friend managing to recover the data from your hard drive?

I keep meaning to back my stuff up after almost losing everything a few months ago, this thread has just prompted me to put everything on my memory stick!

    Thanks!

How broken is it? my H2B is really good with stuff like this, and he said there is a way of getting things back off it.

To those of you who don't have it already, I can highly recommended Dropbox.

    https://www.dropbox.com/

You can download it on your home, work, friends PC, iPhone, iPad etc and it stores all your files for you.

It also means that if you (like I do), amend spreadsheets at work, they automatically update wherever you have dropbox, so you don't have to email files to yourself.

    It is genius!

I was only thinking about this before as my lap top is behaving a bit erratically at the moment - yikes!

Does it cost money Kirst? I have no idea on these things?

    Nope, it's free.

You can pay for upgrades for more memory etc, but to be honest, you should have more than enough with the free package.

Thanks for the reminder - I have Dropbox on my Ipad and my Netbook but hadn't installed it on the Mac (which is of course what I use for proper wedding stuff - ie not just searching ebay and Hitched for ideas!)
