AIBU?

I do not have kids so don't know whether this is something that I should be annoyed about but wondered what you guys thought.........

Have just been to Sainsburys. They do loose bagels in the bakery section and are actually quite nice, not too dry. Anyway, when I went to pick 4 bagels (its any 4 bagels or rolls for £1.40) there was a woman there with her child. The child had picked up a bagel and was playing with it, had not actually put it in his mouth but fingers all over it. Who knows where those fingers had been.

The woman said to her child 'put that down'. She finished picking her bread rolls and walked away with her child.

Am I wrong in thinking that she should have included that bagel in what she was buying, she was still picking when he put it down.

I did not buy that bagel, I was going to tell a member of staff but there was not anyone around.

If that was you as someone buying a bagel, what would you have done?

If it was your child, would you have picked that item?

She should have bought it. I do have children and would no way have left it there, that is minging. I wouldn't buy there again tbh.

She shouldn't have let him pick it up in the first place!

This is why I avoid the rolls/bagels/cakes where people pick there own.

I hate it when anyone, child or not picks up loose food items likes this and then after holding it for a while puts it back (and yes I have seen adults do this). I often give them my evil eyes but them don't seem to get the hint!

Being honest I probably wouldn't have said anything although I would want to as I'd imagine the shopkeepers humouring me but then not actually doing anything. Lame excuse I know. I haven't got children but I like to think that I'd buy the item if it were my child.

Unfortunately though I think that's one of the risks of buying things where you can choose your own like that. People seem to be incapable of using the tongs. Or the tongs are missing, in which case they could turn a plastic bag inside out and use that to pick their rolls, but they don't.?

why? it's hardly sainsbuggers fault she's a skank. what are they supposed to do, stand guard over them? ?

this could have happened in any shop, and probably does. we're probably eating all sorts of random baybeh germs...

Unless you want everything vacuum sealed what do we do? I would buy a lot of fruit/veg/cakes at markets and frankly its probably best not to think who has handled stuff before me. ?

Eww. Yes, she should have bought it - but this is also why I won't buy things that just anyone can pick up (unless they can be washed).

    I didn't really explain that did I?

I wouldn't buy my bagels from a dispenser at the height a child can grab. I think my children are great but I have caught them picking their noses and sctatching their bums ?

I would still use Sainsbugs though.

WSS. Having said that, I frequently end up with extra stuff in my shopping for this very reason. My almost 3 year old is a bread fiend and has often opened the end of a pack of bread and taken bits out, so I end up buying Hovis or <yeuch> Asda's own bread rather than the usual Warburtons.

She should have bought it, yes.

I would have bought a bread roll/bagel if B had handled it but maybe not something that can be washed.

But, I can imagine a few other shoppers other than that child touched those bagels throughout the day-test freshness etc so I guess its par for the course if you are buying from such display counters.
