Flowmojo, 20 June, 2012 at 15:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 33

I downloaded around 12 before i went on honeymoon including the 50 Shades Trilogy and the Hunger games Trilogy.. I am now on the third HG book and need some mroe inspiration!!

The Hunger games was a surprise to me as i didnt think it ws my 'thing' but ive really enjoyed them so far, i normally read chick lit a la Sophie Kinsells and Marian Keyes and so on. Anyone got any reccomendations?

I dont really like crime books or sci fi types!!

I am just finishing reading Emily Giffin's "Something Borrowed" and have just realised, like literally just realised that the movie of the same name was based on it! haha, chick lit like you usually read was good. If you fancy a change from chick lit, try John Grisham "The Confession". It's crime, and I don't usually like crime either but that one was great! Its about a young guy on death row. I couldn't put it down!

I read this last week in paper form (an actual book, with pages to manually turn - was weird!) and can agree, 'mazing! Cried like a baby at the end though.

Jodi Picoult is amazing. Definitely not chick-lit, in the sense of Sophie Kinsella, but quite girl orientated in my opinion. Most of them have a moral issue e.g. one revolves around a child who needs a new heart, but the heart donor is a murderer - do you take the heart? Have you seen My Sister's Keeper? That's based on one of her books (although the book is much better!). I have a load of the actual books hanging around if you want me to send you one to try out? I've read them all!

For a quick, one night, laugh-out-loud romance, I would recommend "Love from both sides" by Nick Spalding... I read it in one evening and it made me howl! very funny, with a different take on romance.

^ This. Also Miranda Dickinson, 'It started with a kiss' is a good chick-lit read.

I love reading and although i normally read romance/light hearted books, i like going down the free books/cheaper ones and downloading authors I have never heard of/not keen on to try and find something different.

Would recommend Jodi Picoult, Dorothy Koomson, Adele Parks, Audrey Niffeneger

The help is a good book too, first one i bought on my kindle and loved it!

if you've ever seen the TV programme Castle, they released the books they talked about in the series "written" by the fictional character Richard Castle, but they can be read alone from the series but it's quite good to know who they are based on,

Katia Lief is good for short crime type books, not normally my thing but was going cheap on kindle so i bought one. Not normally a crime person but quite like these, they are a little predictable sometimes but One Cold Night is good and i would recommend

I like looking for books that have been made into movies as i always prefer the books like Nicholas Sparks or Audrey Niffenegger (Time travellers wife - book is amazing but didn't like the film!, although i would HIGHLY recommend her other one - Her Fearful symmetry - one of my favourite books )

Sorry for such a long post!!

    S x

For me it took ages to get into the first book, eventhough I had watched the film first. I am finding the second one a much easier read!

Dorothy Koomson books are great. I've only read two of them but will be reading more. If you fancy chick-lit, Marian Keyes is the best in my opinion. Rachel's Holiday is a fantastic read.

Not sure if it's available to download but one of my favourite books is called "Guilt by Association" by Susan R Sloan. Another good one that had me on edge throughout was called "Speak Softly, She Can Hear", I can't remember the name of the author though.

Another recommendation for 'Something Borrowed' great book!

I've recently LOVED 'confessions of a gp' and forced my friends to all read it, and they all loved it too. Cracking book! Also- The Help is a fab read, One Day, I love Jodi Picoult too.

I've got over 300 books on mine. Gotta love Calibre *cough* recently just added the New York Times Top 100 so got some new stuff to charge through.

There is a follow up to Confessions of a GP called "Confessions of a male nurse". I downloaded it yesterday and will start it tonight when I go to bed.

I LOVED confessions of a GP, it was an excellent read.

I agree that The Help is a really good book. I also read a book called Double Dare by Rhonda Nelson recently which was a free kindle book, that was really good too.

Totally agree with the Jodi Picoult recommendations, Dorothy Koomson is also a good read.

I'm reading the James Patterson series which starts with 1st to die. Total change for me but really enjoying it. Also Tess Gerritson if you like a bit of gore

If you enjoyed The HG, you may like Divergent by Veronica Roth, which is the first in a trilogy. Just like HG, it's the story of a teenage girl, set in the futuristic world but it's obviously a different premise.

The second book, Insurgent was released on 1 May this year.

The third book is planned for release next year.

I loved Divergent and I'm reading Insurgent right now!

Has anyone got any recommendations which are NOT chick lit?

I am currently halfway through the first book in the Hunger Games trilogy so after that will read the second and third but after that I'm stuck!

I love Stephen King, but I know he's not everyone's cup of tea. Dead Zone and Insomnia are my favourites. I also like Mark Billingham, Peter Robinson, Gordon Hurley (he writes crime fiction in and around Portsmouth), Peter James (another 'local', he tends to base his stories in Brighton), John Grisham is hit and miss but some are good, like The Confession and Michael Cricton also. I am a crime/thriller/horror type of girl. Sorry if that's not helpful!
