Any parents of 8 year old girls? Present help

R-A, 28 March, 2009 at 19:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

So H's cousin is 8 tomorrow. We know her well enough to know that she loves pink, "girlie things", Hannah Montana, colouring books and her DS Lite.

I got her some rather "worthy" things at Christmas (crayola type craft packs) but for her birthday I've decided I want to be fun auntie R-A (her folks are older and so all her actual aunts and uncles are in their 50s and 60s).

So I thought of getting her some "make up" type things - not actual make up, more like lip balm, maybe plain glitter nail varnish etc. Would that be an OK for a just turning 8 year old? Mr R-A doesn't like make up full stop so he doesn't agree but I don't see that it could do that much harm.....? Parents of 8 year olds - would you mind them being given something like that? I don't want to upset her folks or try and make her "grow up too fast".... aargh, it's a long time since I was that age, and I wasn't into that kind of stuff anyway. Help!

My daughter turned 9 last week and I still don't allow her to wear make-up of any kind, this includes nail varnish etc So I would check with her parents first to see if they would approve as I know some of her friends have loads of the stuff.

Oe ting I do let her use is my benefit sparkle puff. It's a big pink fluffy puff that has gold dust in it so when you tap it on your skin it's covers you with sparkles, you can get it from the Benefit counter for around £19. My daughter is 13 now but she used to love things like this at that age and I never minded at all. Boots do a nice range called Glitter Babes and have some nice gift bag type efforts, they have a bath type one as well if it would make Mr R-A happier with body puffs and a bath bomb.

Hmm the make-up may be tricky especially if her parents are older. What about some jewellery from Claire's Accessories - hair clips, bead bracelets and the like? Maybe a lip balm too, and all in a nice fluffy pink pencil case?

Thanks EM, that benefit sparkle puff looks great and right up her street!

My mum also didn't let us wear any make up or get our ears pierced (not that I wanted to do either ?).

Maybe I'll ask H's dad to check with them. I want L to enjoy her presents but I genuinely don't want to do anything they won't be happy with. She does have a sister 3 years older so I'm not sure whether she already plays with that kind of thing.

I would get her a Claire's Accessories gift card, then take her there and let her choose. The shops look like Barbara Cartland paid them a visit and threw up inside, so are perfect for girlie 8 year olds.

Thanks sian, D and HH. I'd forgotten about the existence of Claire's ?

Pink and glittery is the way to go if her room is anything to go by....

ETA sian thanks for that Boots link too. I am so crap at this kind of thing, I don't really do pink/make up/glitter.
