Anyone else really looking forward to changing their surname?

Nicalf08, 26 April, 2012 at 13:06 Posted on Planning 0 48

I know there wasa thread a while ago about people not wanting to change their name at all but I was wondering if there is anyone like me who can't wait?? I like my surname and I kind of feel guilty to my dad about being so keen to change it (not that he knows lol) but I have plenty of brothers and nephews to keep the family name going. It's a very common surname and I'm sick of everyone asking if i'm welsh* and if it's with or without an 'e' ? my oh's surname is quite rare, at least I've never heard of anyone else by that name and I just like it. The only faff is going to be changing all my documents - mine and my son's passports, residence permits etc.

*i have no problem with the welsh, I'm just sick of everybody assuming I am.

I can't wait either! I'm sick of being the First in everything, I have a long 'A' surname and people constantly spell it wrong or assume because of the Yorkshire accent that I'm actually dropping a 'H' off of it.

Also our daughter has His surname too so will be ice for us all to match!

I'm having a little dilemma over this as I have a daughter from a previous relationship that obviously shares my maiden name, I wouldn't ask her to change her surname as it's not fair to do so as she's 14 now. I was thinking maybe of double barrelling purely for this reason as I'd not want her feeling the odd one out. Hard to decide though as I know my partner probably wouldn't do the same as me. x

I can't wait to change my name,I'd easily do it tomorrow!! I don't like my name as it's the same as my dad and we don't get on, so i cant wait to change it! I think it'll feel really grown up to! My brother said to me a few weeks ago. "Just think you'll be Mrs Sarah M... in a couple of years" I hadn't actually heard someone outside of us say it. Got all excited!!

I'm looking forward to it more and more. To begin with i didn't want to change my name, because my qualifications are all in my name and i sort of didn't want to be Mrs S the third after his Grandma and my MiL. However, i sort of want to change my name now, i see more and more young married couples with the same name and it has sort of swayed me.

I can't wait either, although my initials will be BS! I'm just hoping we can change my sons name, his is double barrelled with my maiden name and his real dads. His real dad is an a**ehole who doesn't see him anymore and I don't know if he'll agree to changing my sons name so it's double barrelled with his and my new married name :-/

I'm looking foward to it too. All 4 of us will be the same ? OH's name is much less common than mine round these parts (very common up north apparnetly) the only ones I've ever met are oh, his brother and ffil. Our boys and I have doubled their numbers lol

I was wondering about this too, mine is valid for another year or more and my son's until 2015. I wasn't sure if I could just tell everyone I'm to be known as mrs new name and keep old name officially but not sure because of documents for living abroad too hmm...I think we will just have to go to the expense and hassles of changing passports twice :-(

I'm the opposite - i'm going to have to spend the rest of my life spelling out my married surname to EVERYONE, lol. But I am excited.

Passport expired last year so had to renew - getting married in June. I wonder how long I can get away with not renewing it again (Bloody post office fees)! :p

Were you married to your son's father ? If not then you don't actually need his dad's permission to change your his surname.

Just tried to mail u but nt sure if it's gone through! Have a look at the link Nical posted above, it says if there hasn't been any contact its pretty easy to get a court order to change the name without their permission. Did u not need a court order then? Is your daughters dad on the birth certificate?

Hi Haylee81 - have you asked yur daughter how she feels? My mum remarried when I was 15 but she had already changed her name by Deed Poll to match my step-father's when I was about 13 as she was pregnant with my little brother and she wanted to have the same name as him and my step-father. I was quite put out and can remember crying about it all the time because I felt like the odd one out in the family and like every time she saw my name she was reminded of my dad (who she hates!) I also found it embarrassing at parents' evening when people couldn't work out whose mum she was because she had a different name. I know it's much more common nowadays but it did really upset me (probably the teenage hormonoes) so I would discuss it with her to see what she would be happiest with. Sorry you just butt in like that, just seeing your post took me straight back to how I used to feel so thought you might like to hear from someone who had been where your daughter is.

    Hi Bee,

I did look at Nical post and it clarified what my solicitor had told us, Both my daughters wish to change their surname, but eldest was born out of wedlock, youngest was born in it and my daughters are 13 and and 7 respectively, so one was born before 2003, the other after it (there was a change in the law then), both have their fathers name on their birth certificate. My eldest daughter's name change can happen without her fathers consent or knowledge, but for my youngest daughter's name change we will need to apply to do through the court, My ex will be served papers from the court ( this step only happens if your ex is unwilling to co-operate)and it is his responsibility to inform the court of his objections (if he has any), it is then up to the judge to decide if the name change will be in my daughter's best interest. My solicitor has told us that it will most likely be granted as ...1) my daughter wants it ....2) she would be the only child in our family with a different name if it was not granted, ....3) My ex has taken no interest in her upbringing ( neither access rights or financially). In short it would be in my daughter's best interest.

Hope this is helpful to you.

    Regards

    L x

Looking forward to it! My current surname is my old married name - this is my second marriage. My son and I have had the same name - and I only kept my married name for him. However, my son is nearly 18, and about to go to university. I did ask him how he felt about now being the only one in our family with his surname and he's ok!

I practised my new surname/signature and I'm going to have to give it some thought - but its a great Greek/Cypriot name and makes me sound very distinguished! It's quite unusual!

I changed my surname when I got married, but then changed it back to my maiden name.

Our son, and my son from a previous relationship both have my maiden name, it's nice being the same as them. It's also nice not having loads of Harry Potter jokes about my married name.
