Anyone know anything about hedgehogs? - UPDATED WITH A PIC

daisymoo86, 16 July, 2014 at 12:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 23

My dad has just been round my house doing a spot of gardening when in the bushes he heard a noise, low and behold a hedgehog was taking a walk through the hedge.

Now I had heard somewhere that if they are out in the day that something might be wrong with them. Does this count if technically they are not out cos they are still in the hedge?

Thought so, though its disappeared now. Dad says it was moving fine etc. I've read another website that says its den might have been disturbed which is why it was on the move. I'll put some food out for him when I get home in case he is circling my garden and can go from there then.

I think in this case it had been disturbed, more than wandering around on it's own during the day. If you want to feed it (I'm not sure this is encouraged still) I think cat food is best.

My dog found one the other night. She was just silently staring at it and wouldn't come in when I shouted her although the poor wee thing would have been scared none the less! I was happy to see it, as they are on the decline. Love a wee Hedgie!

I was saying that to my mum the other night after I saw the one in the garden. That you don't see so many killed on the roads now, a sign they are in decline. She thought I was sick, but I meant - there aren't so many hedgehogs so aren't so many seen splatted!

Some total arse hit one on our cul-de-sac which we found in the middle of the road one morning, we buried the poor fella.

I hope the one you found is ok Daisymoo.

My cousin and his wife run a hedgehog rescue centre from their home. I have no clue about hedgehogs, but if you want some more advice, I can put you in touch with them.

I was putting my rabbit to bed at about 10 last night (he was on the grass but he sleeps in his hutch for safety from foxes etc) anyway, whilst I was trying to catch said rabbit who quite clearly didn't want to go to bed I noticed a large circular thing under the bird feeder. I put bunny away and approached the circular object, as I got closer I could tell what it was, hedgie was back! And he was helping himself to the bits of food t he birds had knocked off the bird table! I hope he becomes a regular visitor, was lovely to see him for myself.

Awwww, great picture! Did you look up if you should feed him or not? If it's bread he's eating off the bird table, I don't think that's good for them. We used to give them bread and milk, which apparently isn't what you are supposed to and it should be cat food, but obviously info will have changed since I was a kid!

Also, just a warning about your rabbit - Hedgehogs are terrible for fleas, obviously they aren't around the grass at the same time as your bunny, and I don't know if they would be tranferred, but something to keep in mind, don't want your bun to catch them!

We feed the birds seed and suet and I read online that the hedgehogs like sunflower hearts etc so I think that might have been what he was after.

I put food out last night but didn't see him. (some mealworms and sunflower hearts, it does say online not to give them milk or bread). So I am going to carry on putting food and water out for him (its ok to leave food out for them I read online as they need all the help they can get and need fattening up before winter so that they survive). I hope he will come back if I carry on putting food out.

I'm a veterinary nurse and our general rule is; If they're about during the day and moving purposefully they may be an adult feeding young, keep an eye on them. If out during the day and seems at all disorientated, wobbly, not moving etc, get them to a vet.

We see lots and lots brought in and I love nursing them Smiley smile

We tried to save a hedgepig the other week (unfortunately, it was badly injured and had to be put down). Since then, OH really wants us to get a hedgepig once we're living together.

So ever since I saw the hedgehog that first night I have been putting food out. I went to the pet shop and got special hedgehog food.

Each night I have put it out it has gone the next morning. Obviously I didn't know exactly who was eating it just that someone was enjoying the tasty treats. I have been putting them into a bowl which I nestle under a bush so its hard for bigger animals to get to it.

Anyway, on auto pilot last night to go fill up the bowl but my hand under the bush to get the bowl out and low and behold mr hog is already sat in the bowl. He must've been waiting for me to feed him! I walked away for 5 mins to give him chance to back away, I went back and put food in the bowl (extra this time as I thought he deserved a treat) and this morning the whole lot has gone!

I am so excited about my hedgehog! haha. I'm even thinking of building/buying him a house to put near the food bowl so he can hide if he needs to.
