Band or DJ

Sloth, 13 April, 2012 at 09:47 Posted on Planning 0 24

I have always said I want a Band at my reception, but now struggling whether to compromise with a DJ. I have overspent in some areas and would like to take some out of the budget, although could stretch to it if I decide its worth it. However, Boy is making choosing a band difficult not liking most of them but not finding alternatives. Also we have a sound limiter so the lady I was emailing ruled out the one band boy did like.

I have never seen a bad band at the wedding, and always danced the most at these weddings. While DJs have been hit and miss at the weddings I have been to, and often are cheesy or play inappropriate songs.

Sorry drawn out thought process, just feel this makes or breaks the evening so stressing me out slightly.

Question really - are you going band or DJ and why? What are your experiences at other weddings you have been to?

We are having a DJ at ours. ONe of the main reasons is that there is not a lot of space to have a band. I always think that a DJ can judge the room better and play music according to the there and then.

    We are having a band.

It was one of the areas that we agreed to spend a little more money. We want a fun laid back evening and wanted a good band. Like you the weddings i have been to with a DJ are hit or miss.

Were having a band because this particular band was playing the night we met and we both love them! If it hadnt been for that we probably would have gone for a DJ.

We're having a DJ, we are into RnB, hip hop, garage and house music so a band wouldnt really be appropriate. Plus neither of us like them! With our DJ we can pick out all the songs we want played, there will be absolutely no cheese, 60s,70s or 80s music!

I prefer a DJ as I like hearing the proper songs. Our DJ asked us what we wanted played so we gave him a list, that way there was no terrible cheese.

Mmmmm good point on more control on the music, the Boy does like some odd songs we can add in. Thanks all, I do have to comprimise somewhere so this one may not be a bad one to do.

Anyone had a good DJ in Surrey/Berks area?

We are having a DJ because I prefer them to bands and love to have a boogie to the original cheesy songs.

Ours is based in Epsom, Surrey and came highly recommended by our venue. He only charges £200 as well though that may be a special rate as he plays our venue a lot. He will give us his folder of songs 2 months before the wedding which we an choose our playlist from and anything he doesn't have hell get for us. He does us a CD of the playlist as well and will play background music during the wedding breakfast. I'll get you his number if u like?

We went with band called 'The Redfords' as we wanted live music.

They send a list so you can take out 'cheesy' songs and they will learn the ones you want eg for first dance. In between the sets they play music too.

They are based in Kent but will travel anywhere.

We are having a band, first time I heard them I wanted them but when they quoted I thought it was far too much but H2B said to book them as I had my heart set on them, but I also like dancing to original artists, it's a tricky one, my problem is I am trying to please the guests when I should be focusing on our day for us.

We're just having an ipod with access to spotify so have an unlimited choice! I should point out thought our evening is very low key and no extra guests so just the 40 from the wedding breakfast.

We had considered a band but I think for cost reasons we're looking more towards a DJ, that and we both want to have a good ole dance.

We met with a DJ yesterday and that's his main job so he seems to put a lot of effort in to getting it right rather than just someone who does it as a hobby. He has an ace online system so you can put down songs you want or don't want, how you want things to run etc. I was really impressed. Guests can also log on and make requests beforehand (and you can veto them ?)

We are having a DJ, I think it's lovely to have a band if you can afford it but for us we want a variety of music and wouldn't want a band that just played one style of music...at least with a DJ we can have something for the oldies and the young ones! it depends on the style of band...i went to a wedding where they had more of a rock band (as thats what the B&G liked) but i found it was far too samey and for the people that weren't into rock there was no option but to listen to it!! x

We're having a band doing three 45 minute sets, songs inbetween each set and afterwards have been chosen by us and wil be put into a massive playlist. We're both really into music and it would be wrong of us to not have a decent band! I'd say 90% of the guests are rockers too so no bother there. We were recommended one from near the venue (miles away, where I grew up) and they were lovely and very reasonable. We'd cut corners pretty much everywhere so we cold get a band tho.

Go with whatever you think suits you as a couple. Good luck! x
