Been AWOL...I'm back...with some sad news [:(]

Mellow_Yellow, 5 November, 2011 at 11:42 Posted on Planning 0 38

Hey Hitchers,

My Grandad passed away on Tuesday morninng, it's all been very sad...my Gran noticed that he wasn't breathing and tried to revive him while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. The funeral is on Monday as we have had to allow time for all the family to travel here for it, I'm doing a reading but I'm not a very good public speaker and I'm worried I'll ruin it. I've got an essay due in to Uni on Wednesday that is worth 50% of my final grade; I was hoping to put pen to paper this week but there has just been so much to organise that I haven't had time - I'm worried I'll fail. I just feel that with everyone at home grieving it would be easier to get all my worries out on here...hope you don't mind.

x

I'm so sorry to hear your sad news, i did a reading for my aunts funeral a few years ago, it was one of the hardest things I have ever done. when I started to struggle I looked at her coffin and reminded myself that I was doing it for her and I got through it.

As for your Uni work, speak to them NOW and get an extension, it will be fine x

I.m really sorry for your loss. I.m sure you'll be fine with the reading. Contact your uni to explain the situation as I.m sure they'd understand and give you an extension. Then you can focus on the funeral and saying goodbye properly without worrying about your essay. X

Really sorry to hear that Smiley sad the reading you do will be great, everyone will be proud no matter how it goes. I work in a university and quite often approve deadline extensions, you'll have no issue getting an extension if u mention it now, and they'll most likely review your marks at the exam boards at the end of the year. Don't worry about uni, just focus on ur family now xxxxx

I'm sorry to hear about your Grandad MY. I'm sure he wouldn't want you to fail your course though and just because your working on your essay doesn't mean you have forgotten or are not thinking about him. If everything is organised for your grandad then maybe you can knuckle down on your essay now. xx

Thanks everyone. I spent this morning putting together a booklet for his funeral, it looks really nice and I feel like I can focus on Uni work now that I know everything is done. I know that they would likely give me an extension, but I have the essay due in by the 11th (which means I need to post it by the 9th), an exam on 17th, a presentation on 21st, another presentation on 30th, an essay due on 5th December, and a report due on 7th December. So if i start pushing things back now it will all get on top of me at some point - I think I need to just power on through.

Thanks for all the vibes, internet weirdie hugs, and general support...I can always count on this place! x

Sorry to hear ur news, such an upsetting time without having all the stress of uni work too. I know what u mean about everything building up if you extend the time for your essay...sometimes it can make you feel better just to keep busy and have something to focus on to take your mind off things so hopefully that will work for you. Just make sure you take some time out too, let us know how you get on x

    Oh hun, I'm so sorry.

There is nothing I can add that others havent said, but dont worry about the reading, you will do a wonderful job, and if you get emotional, you will only be expressing what everyone else is feeling so it will be entirely appropriate. Now is not the time to have to worry about uni, talk to them and do it when you are in the right frame of mind to do justice to it, which isn't now. Offload here if you need to, sending large, but very inadequate hugs xx

Well, I've broken the 1000 word barrier and the essay should be 2500 - so not too far to go. I've also completed my bibliography (as I always do that first) and each time I reference one of the sources I'm copying it to my reference list. Getting started is always the worst part, so as I've managed that I'm confident that I'll be sorted for the deadline. In a strange sort of way, it really helped last night having something else that I totally had to focus on.

Thanks once again to everyone for all of your kind words. x

Sorry to hear your news. I'm glad you're feeling a bit more confident about the essay. I'd still, like others have said though, just make your tutors aware of the situtation even though you are not wanting an extension. I'm sure you will do a brilliant job with the reading - even if you do get upset, it won't ruin it at all and people won't mind a bit. Good luck with everything.

    Sorry to hear that.

You won't mess up the reading. It will go OK.

Re: uni. Ring them and get an extension, and fill in an extenuating circumstances form, they will take your loss into account when they mark it. Please do this, I didn't when my grandpa died, and it nearly cost me my qualification. x

First of all, I am very sorry to hear that. Have an internet weirdie ? from me. x

Secondly, you won't ruin your reading. Just take your time. What feels like a long time to you won't be to everyone else.

Thirdly, have you spoken to your uni about it? If you are struggling they will probably grant you an extension given the circumstances.

I understand how the reading feels so daunting. Try not to fret, you may well find that when the time comes it was not as difficult as you thought it would be.

Also, I am sure uni would grant you an extension given the circumstances.

I'm sorry to here this Hun. Wish i'd seen it before i sent you that message to you this morning. Sending you internet weirdie hugs today. Take care of yourself and don't worry about your uni work. As others have said. If you let them know what's happening, they can usually help you out with an extension or a plan of action on how to deal with your various workloads that are coming up.

    Take Care!

    xx

Hey everyonE, the funeral was very nice and very sad, everyone said the reading was lovely...although I felt that I went a little fast. I only have 200 words left to write for my essay, which will be my conclusion, I think it looks fine, but have emailed my tutor to keep her informed anyway.

Thanks again for all of the support, you have all been fantastic. xxx
