Bridesmaid is expecting

amihohu, 28 April, 2013 at 00:44 Posted on Planning 0 17

Evening all!

So, I have had the news tonight that one of my bridesmaids has found out she is pregnant, which is of course exciting news, but she is unsure about whether she would still like to be a bridesmaid on the day. She thinks she will be about 6 months at the wedding date.

So I guess I have a couple of questions (I have also emailed the seamstress and the shop I bought the dresses from, but thought I'd see if any of you have any experience in the matter Smiley smile )

I've already ordered the bridesmaid dresses and paid half the cost for them, they are from Dessy. Do you think it's at all likely I could get my money back/cancel the order if she decides she would like to step down from being a bridesmaid? The dresses are due to come into the shop on the first weekend of June.

If she would like to still be a bridesmaid, do you think this dress could be fixed to fit her? Thanks!

I don't think you would be able to get your money back, I am guessing they are already being made?

I have no idea if the dress could be fixed but I don't think it's a great style for someone expecting at around 6 months. Obviously you didn't chose it to be a maternity dress but looking at the material and sash type thing I'm not too sure how it would be.

Sorry I am not of any use advice wise Smiley smile

Yeah they were ordered at the start of March, I have no idea if Dessy start work on the dresses straight away, but guessing they probably will have by now Smiley sad it doesnt look like an ideal maternity dress either, but I'm hoping someone will be able to convince me otherwise!

If I were you I'd get in touch with Dessy asap and tell them your dilemma and see what they can do, if they havent started to make up your order yet they may let you have that fabric and colour in a different style which may be a bit more comfy for a pregnant lady?

    That's great advice.

Also, don't assume your friend wouldn't want to be your BM anymore. I would work on the assumption she does. If you tried to have a conversation with her about it, I would be worried she might take it as you would rather she stepped down, if you know what I mean.

I think you/she needs to decide for sure if she does want to do it or not before contacting the dressmakers.

Yes, that's quite right actually. Have a conversation, but proceed with massive caution. You don't want her to get the wrong impression that you want her to step down.

Thanks for the advice ladies. It's cool, she contacted me as she wasn't sure about still being one. I told her of course I'd still love her to be one, but it was entirely up to her as I know it may be a lot of work for her and a rather long day!

I imagine she'll be fine to still be a bridesmaid at 6 months as she won't be huge by then. Having said that, I can't see that dress being suitable as its so fitted. It would be a shame for her not to be a bridesmaid.

I would think they stat making them according to when the wedding is rather than when they were ordered. Surely that would help them to be more helpful in situations like this or they wanted to make goodwill gestures to people who had cancel in difficult circumstances.

    Lovely dress.

I agree, contact dessy asap, they might have a dress in the same colour but different style to suit.

If she isnt sure about still be the MOH, what about asking her to do a reading instead?

I have a bridesmaid who will be 5 months pregnant on our wedding day. We have gone for this Dessy dress as it is quite accommodating for a bump and we just ordered a size two up from her usual dress size. It will need to be altered in the next few weeks but hopefully the two sizes will give us the leeway we'll need!

If it's her first baby she may not show that much at 6 months. And in your second trimester a long day means nothing to most. Most ladies are still working full day shifts at this time and having a social life afterwards too. Most dresses can be altered to fit a bump without having to go for a 'maternity' dress that can look frumpy and horrible. Let the dress be made and see what happens. She may need it taken out a bit but not alot and if she wears light sculpting dress underneath it'll give her abit of support and help with the fit Smiley smile

I experienced this at my wedding, one of my bridesmaids was 6 months pregnant when we got married and I contacted the supplier as soon as I found out to see what could be done. Unfortunately they had already started making the dress and said it would be an extra £100 on top of the £300 I had already spent to change the order. We had ordered it a couple of sizes bigger than she usually was anyway and took it to a local dressmaker who changed the back from a button closer to a lace closer and you wouldn't have known any different.

On the day she was reasonably big and had to keep letting the dress out a bit as she had food, but she brought a back up dress with her to change into! She did say that she would step down, but I would have rather changed the dress entirely than not have her as BM on my special day. (She's the one on the left)

My sister was 2 weeks off her due date and was a bridesmaid for me. Thankfully we knew and just ordered a Dessy maternity dress.

In your situation though I'd say that dress would be difficult to alter to accommodate a bump. You could always sell it and find her something else?

Call dessy and see if they can make a dress in the same colour but matenity style - I think she should still be a bridesmaid, hope she doesn't step down

    Hey again all,

So my pregnant lady has had a think and has said she would still love to be a bridesmaid, so that's all good Smiley smile . I have contacted the shop and the seamstress asking their advice, but haven't heard anything back yet. I don't know if it would be possible to contact Dessy directly, as the dresses weren't ordered direct from them by me, but via the bridal shop? I guess I can have a look on their website for contact details and see what they say. I have a feeling it will be too late to cancel/change the dress order though Smiley sad so I may have to sell it online and buy another, which is going to be a bit of a hit to the budget unfortunately! Also I'm not sure if its going to be pushing it time wise, the bridal shop allowed 12 weeks for delivery for these dresses, and depending on if we have to wait for it to come in before the seamstress can tell if it could be altered. I'm not sure wears gona have enough time to order another from dessy?!

I'd urge caution at the 12 week delivery time, my Dessy dresses took 20 weeks! The bridal shop said to allow 6 months. What colour are your bridesmaids wearing? Is it the same as the first picture?

I don't think Dessy will speak to you directly. I had a complaint about my Alfred Angelo dress and they basically said there was nothing I could do about it via them and had to go back to the dress shop.

My sister was BM at 26 weeks pregnant. They'd ordered the dress (very similar style to yours) in a size 18, whereas she's normally a 12, and had it taken in. It looked great on her but she did take a more comfy dress to change into for the evening (once all the photos had been taken etc).

I doubt very much they'd refund you, but if they haven't started making it, they may agree to make it in a larger size so it can then be taken in.
