Cake choices

Luna_12, 22 September, 2012 at 13:40 Posted on Planning 0 17

My best friend has her own cake business and she is making our wedding cake. We have chosen a traditional four tier white cake with beads in our wedding colours (red, black and white). She came to visit this morning and showed me some pictures of a cupcake wedding cake she made for a client today and it blew me away. Now I am wondering if we have made the wrong choice. What are your opinions? Do you prefer cupcake wedding cakes or traditional wedding cakes? Im so confused lol xxxx

I prefer cupcake towers - I think that they are prettier and more interesting to look at. I also think they are more likely to get eaten up compared to a massive wedding cake, some of which might go to waste (based on what OMs tell me).

It's up to you though - cupcakes and traditional wedding cakes can both look rubbish, but well-designed and made versions of either will look fabulous.

I prefer traditional but that is because I love fruit cake and you buy a cup cake anywhere these days. You could combine both

I agree with Gurzle- I think cupcakes are more likely to be eaten( although I do love the look of a beautifully made wedding cake.) I don't know anyone who really likes traditional fruit cake (a lot of people hate dried fruit or marzipan) and to be charging hundreds for a sponge cake is wrong. We will probably go down the cupcake route- you can have them in your colours or different flavours so there's something for everyone :-) I was looking today on sweetie pies in Twickenham, I like the mixes of mini and full sized cupcakes on the stand-they're so pretty !

Perhaps you could have a look online for inspiration. You could maybe have a cupcake tower with small cutting cake on top or have a two tier cake & a selection of cupcakes as well. I like traditional cakes but they are not for everyone - they don't have to be just fruit cake. People often have different flavours for each tier. Ther are loads of options - it's just down to choosing...

I had exactly the same dilemma when we were planning our wedding. Couldn't decide between a traditional cake, mini cheesecakes or cupcakes.

I decided that I had seen a lot of cupcake towers at weddings, so decided on 7 cakes instead!

Worked out cheaper than a traditional 4 tier and meant we could have a variety of flavours!

I love cupcakes but something inside of me says they're not for a wedding. We're having a 3 tier wedding cake with three different flavours, fruit, carrot & lemon sponge. If it doesn't all get eaten then I'm giving the hotel staff some food boxes & asking them to divide it up, cling film it & I'll hand it out the following day to guests who stayed overnight.

We are still debating, we are going to my mums today so will ask her opinion. My only worry is that we wont be able to use our cake topper with a cupcake tower. Our friend is going to be calling me later to get our decision. We love the traditional style and our wedding is very traditional in all other ways so I don't know if something a bit quirky like a cupcake tower would break up the traditional look too much or be a nice break from it.

This! This is the kind of thing we're doing, sort of.

I couldn't decide what to have, and I thought I was being so unique in suggesting we do a whole dessert buffet with lots of cake flavours and brownies and mini cheesecakes, etc. Turns out it's quite the done thing these days. And it totally is working out cheaper than a wedding cake, and I've picked up cheap cake plates and platters in charity shops/tesco/M&S to make it look interesting. It probably the thing I'm most excited about for the wedding (except the whole getting married bit - that wins hands down).

And to combat the problem of cake or sweets being left over, we're doing take away boxes so guests can take some home with them as their favour.

As for the question about whether I prefer traditional cake or cupcake tower... I'm not a huge fan of either, though cupcakes win out slightly. Every wedding cake I've eaten hasn't been stellar in terms of having a moist, soft crumb and rich flavour, and I've never liked icing on them. Usually they taste slightly dry and overly sweet. I don't like fruit cake, either. And as for cupcakes.. Well, I like the idea of the cake cutting ritual, and cutting a dinky little cake on top of the cupcake tower just doesn't seem to cut it (pun not intended). Cupcakes do satisfy my need for lots of different flavours and they are usually moister and fluffier than a big ol wedding cake.. depending on the bakery that makes them, of course. My brother had magnolia bakery cupcakes at his wedding and they were luscious, went down a treat with everyone, but they didn't do a cake cutting. My other brother had the big wedding cake, and I didn't even care to eat it- just wasn't worth the calories. My sister did the cupcake tower with cutting cake on top, and they were the epitome of dry, over sweet wedding cake with too-sugary icing. Sad Smiley sad

You could have a regular size cake as the top cake and still have cake toppers on top. Also this would mean you have a cake to cut in front of your guests too

I'm doing my own cake - having a traditional 3/4 tier cake with each tier a different cake.
BUT as I'm well known for my cupcakes throughout all our guests I have to incorporate them in there somewhere
    Sooo
Our centre of our treats table - started off sweetie buffet will be a cupcake tower Smiley laugh

How about a bauble cake which are small cakes rather than cupcakes, it's the cake of my dreams. Im going to have a go at making them myself, I don't know how to put up a pic but if you just google bauble cakes or goto the website gorgeous cakes.

on a side note does anyone know how to add a pic from an iPad or is it not possible.

Wow that looks amazing! I think we're having a tiered cake but with different flavours per tier, but after seeing that picture I'm now not so sure! I'd want a slice of every cake if I had 7 though and I don't think my dress will allow for that ?

We're looking at either a croquembouche or bauble cakes with a big one on top for cutting! I love the look of a croquembouche and I'm a massive fan of profiteroles, but not so sure everybody else would be a fan because I know some people don't like pastry!
