Maybe you're hanging around with the wrong type of women? ?

Pretty much my only stipulation about our 'forever' home is that it must have an open fire or at the very least a wood burning stove. I get withdrawal symptoms if I can't play with fire on a regular basis. I think it stems from many years as a Scout. I have pyromania issues.

I'm with you there RA, both our homes have had big open fires. I grew up with a massive one, one you could sit in the fireplace beside the fire if you didn't mind sooty jeans.

We too are smug all weather campers and we're bluddy great at it. Scotland is where we normally end up, but Ireland's great for 'wild camping'.

We stayed here last year https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=2905 You can't have fires, but the facilities are great. It's at Dent which has a quaint village with pubs and there are plenty of walks and hills. It's a bit expensive for a camp site.

Madam would probably enjoy one of those luxury Yurt thingys. We are off for the late May Bank Holiday but I am going to fulfil a very sad ambition to go fossil hunting in Lyme Regis. There was a list of the 50 'best' campsites in the Independent

We're probably off to North Wales again. The campsite we found last year has two toilets, one shower and an outside sink with cold water for your dishes ? You go in, find somewhere to pitch and a man comes around in the morning to collect money. However it's very basic, although not as basic as just a field. With the children a toilet and shower is very useful!

I'm hoping Mr G is going to take me camping somewhere with just my small biker tent and a couple of rucksacks. Got all the kit for basic camping, just never go!

I like rathlin island off the north coast of ireland, but you can walk the whole island in a day, so probably not what you are after tbh. its pretty basic apart from that, though.

the isle of skye is cool beans, too, but i have never been to the lakes or wherever, so have no comparison.

If you like proper walking/navigation (none of this poncing around on footpaths malarky!) then Fieldhead campsite in Edale is a great place for yomping over Kinderscout. Crowden campsite is pretty good too for peatbog bashing over Bleaklow/Blackhill. Don't know about fires, though.

The campsite at the foot of Gordale Scar (near Malham) in the Yorkshire Dales allows fires and there are some good pub walks from there, but not big hills.

You are aware they have hotels in the Lake District? Nice ones. With hot water. And mini bars.

We went here last summer https://theoldpostofficecampsite.co.uk/

We pitched the tent by the stream where a couple of the party did some fishing. The shower was a bit....errr..... well, your Mrs won't like it, but there is a washing machine and a dryer which I think you had to pay £1.00 each for if you wanted to use it. I don't know if you are allowed to have a fire - we just cooked on a camp thing. Oh, and there's a pub on the corner where you're able to buy pitchers of beer to take back to your tent!

It's not the most lush of campsites but we certainly enjoyed it. The stream was lovely and kept the men and kids happy.... oh and also kept our wine cold as we kept it in there to keep it cool <grinz>

As far as location was concerned, we really enjoyed being in that part of the lakes - it wasn't the over commercial side at all.... oh and H was happy as he was able to take us all to sellafield... but then he is a great big physics nerd afterall ?

    Hope you find somewhere nice.

Fossil hunting in Lyme Regis is not sad - it's fab! I love Lyme - but you must go to Charmouth too as the fossils are best there.

MrH is asking if you've got a decent hammer? He's geological hammer obsessed (he uses it for all household DIY) but has just pointed out to me that you must use safety specs. And that you should only hammer fallen rocks.

    I'm very jealous.

We're (hopefully) off to Fieldhead at the end of june.

Complete glamper here, where OH is used to wildcamping on Dartmoor in his backpacking tent. Bit different to our family dome tent (for two of us)?

JK I would love to go fossil hunting with you. MrH might even let you borrow his hammer, seeing as how you've discussed minges and all ?

Seriously, I don't need much persuading to head down to Lyme for the day ?

Me either, once my wrist works again. The boys love it.

We basic camp - tent, sleeping bags trangia - but I do need a fire, a steam to chill wine and ideally a pub that does good food. If you decide on Snowdonia there're a great basic site (with a toilet) at the foot of Tryfan and I can point you in the direction of a pub with a fab menu for carnivores, good choice for veggies and amazing thai green curry.

I'm not bringing those pesky brats though. I'll tell Mr JK it's...um....research, and studying, and the like.

And I'd be honoured if Mr H would let me handle his hammer ?

That's really interesting Hazel as a couple of the sites we are considering are near Charmouth. I hadn't even got as far as hammers <feels a purchase coming on> so recommendations welcome.

Hadn't realised I was not alone in my sad obsession Hazel, JK and Tilly you are all welcome to come and join us!

Not really 'wild' camping but this is a good site. https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=6944 - very basic. Silly name. Fairly good location for a bit of stomping around east sussex/coast paths/downs etc.

It has a block with a couple of grotty but usable loos, plus two 'compost' loos hidden in the woods. There are showers, but Madam will hate them. If she can be persuaded to wash in a bowl and make great use of Batista dry shampoo for a few days then you might get away with this one. Mixture of people go here - families, people like us with our big tent, proper stove, airbeds and all that malarkey plus bikers, backpackers, bedroll and trangia/hexi types. They come round on a tractor and sell you a crate of wood for a fiver for your fire.

Fire is good. I won't go anywhere now that doesn't let us have a fire. We even make dough twists, in manner of boy scouts.

I grew up as an honorary cub from the age of about 3 to about 12, and make a mean fire....

Oh and htey have a 'yurt' for hire - but I don't think its all that glam, tbh!
