Can anyone give me a guide on price for our wedding?

Victoria030384, 1 September, 2011 at 20:43 Posted on Planning 0 17

I dont know if this is cheeky and please feel free to not comment if you are offended in any way but my OH and I are looking at venues for our wedding, both the ceremony and reception and I don't know if what I am looking at is stupidly expensive but they seem to be way more than what I was expecting to pay!

What we are looking for is: ceremony and wedding breakfast for 80 guests and approximately 130 guests for a buffet in the evening. We want a nice hotel or manor (ie something that looks pretty and with a bit of character) in the Warwickshire area although this has some flexibility. We are looking for a July/August wedding on either a Friday or Saturday and although Friday is a little cheaper to be honest its a difference of about £600-£1000 depending on the venue.

Two that I have looked at have come in at over £8000 and thats without paying for the registrar! Is this normal? If anyone would be willing to give me a rough guide of what they paid or were quoted I would be really greatful - if this is the cost then we need a serious rethink!!!

That sounds about right for a typical wedding, however you can save money if there are things that aren't important to you - such as having a toastmaster, or high street bridesmaids dresses instead of 'proper' ones, or if you're having everything in one place and don't need to hire fancy cars to get you to the venue, etc. You can save a lot of money on photos too if you go for a disc only or basic album package rather than paying an extra £400 on an italian leather album, for example.

It'll be the guest list that makes the cost high - but your chosen venue will set maximum and minimum numbers so cutting back on numbers may not help if you're having to pay for places you aren't using, if that makes sense.

If you could move out of the summer peak season to, say, November or March, you will find a lot of venues are considerably cheaper.

Sounds about right......what you getting for that though? as if you get things included like 3 course WB, wine, bubbly for toast, chair covers, etc it is good but if its just a wedding and then WB with no wine or extras etc then maybe not so.

    I'm in Scotland

We getting married in a country house hotel.

We having approx 50 adults and 10 kids for meal and approx 150-180 for evening buffet.

We chose to just have wine for the toasts to help keep costs down.

Ours is coming in at approx £3200 for the above.

According to the magazine I read today the average UK wedding costs £24k alot of people Ive met on here are spending alot less and still having stunning weddings - I thinks its you who makes the wedding not the amount you spend on it.

    I am spending about 15k total https://www.hitched.co.uk/chat/forums/t/254074.aspx

EDIT - Im South East England

welcome drink of pimms or non-alcoholic summer fruit punch

afternoon cream tea with champagne, including sandwiches, canapes, scones and cream and small cakes.

evening bbq with steak, salmon, lincolnshire sausage and marinated chicken, 3x salads, potatoes and fresh bread

room hire & bar (guests pay)

    red carpet

tealights and lanterns for tables and church candles for the fireplaces

    all linen and crockery hire

    cakestand and knife

    Master of ceremonies/toast master

bridal suite and breakfast for me and D.

We're paying a seperate £500 ish for the church. EDITED TO ADD Thats for august bank holiday weekend next year.

What are you getting included for £8000?

In my opinion, I think that is quite a lot! I am having a church wedding and then reception and evening party at a hotel for 65 day guests and 130 for night time and including food and drink for all day its going to be half the price. But, if your venue is like a proper manor house type thing then maybe that is why the price is more?

I guess it depends on the area as well, where i live all the popular wedding venues are around the same price.

That price is to hire the room, a 3 course basic wedding breakfast, toast drink and glass of wine with the meal and a finger buffet at night. That is it! No decoration, chair covers or extras and thats why it seemed a lot.

Now that seems a lot more reasonable for that price! At least with 37 rooms you can accomodate most of the guests and that would also help towards costs. I think maybe we need to shop around a bit more!

That is so cheap, i am in the berkshire area and they are quoting from 10k to 15k that is just for the:

    WB

    welcoming drinks of sparkling wine

    3 course meal

    wedding co ordinator

    room for me and OH

    toast master

    table plan and place cards

    disco floor

and that is about it so no canapes and no evening buffet!!!!

and i am still looking for venues that are cheaper!!!

I think thats a lot for what you are getting! Try shopping around some more and get other venues to send details and also consider different days / months - that can save you loads!

We got married out of season (March) and our package was £5,000 for 60 guests, then £65 per head on top of that (we ended up with 65 adults).

This was for room hire, reception drink, red carpet, cake stand and knife, 3 course WB with half bottle wine each, toasting drink, evening buffet for 75% and the bridal suite.

Our church alone was over £1,000!

Warwickshire IS expensive for the stately home type hotels. I grew up in Stratford and my first wedding was at Billesley Manor. I think it was well over £8k for the venue, food, drinks etc (we had the ceremony there too that made the cost higher than just for a reception) and that didn't include flowers or the band. And that was 10yrs ago!

There are plenty of cheaper places where you'll probably have just as nice a time though - places marketed more as hotels than as stately homes. Exclude anywhere with "Manor" "Abbey" or "Castle" in the title LOL!! Also anything set in hundreds of acres of grounds will be expensive.

Where are you in Warwickshre anyway? That will have some bearing on what people suggest.

IMO this is about right. Our package started out at £6000, - this was based on 60 guests and included a 3 course WB, glass of pimms on arrival, glass of sparkling for the toast, and half a bottle of wine per person, coffee and petit fours, table linen, master of ceremonies, red carpet, cake knife and stand, bridal suite and buffet for 60 people. We had 67 guests in the day and extra 20 on the night I added canapés and beers for the welcoming drinks as well as the pimms so we ended up paying £7000 in total - we got married in a lovely stately home on a Sunday and it was money well spent. This was in the North East, so if you compare this with your price bearing in mind everything gets that bit more expensive the further South you have been quoted about right.
