Children in Need curmudgeonly rant

hazel, 14 November, 2008 at 23:22 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 42

I know it raises loads of money for charity and does great work and all that but the TV side of it has been going on for so many years it's stale and I'm afraid I'm bored of it. And I'm really not all that excited about my dentist wearing a wig to dress up like someone from Grease.

I do give money every year, but I do know I'm a miserable old cow. Flame away.

Agree its a stale format now. Our regional bit is especially tiresome this year. Nowt else on though.

I won a bottle of Lambrini at our CIN day at work though ?

I'm the same - I actually dislike Children in need and I know this makes me a terrible person. Its all so boringly 'look at me I'm krazeee'. And I hate putting money in buckets rather than gift aiding it but feel mean if I don't contribute to the bucket rattled under my nose.

Also Pudsey Bear made my daughter cry today. Although my son pointed out loudly 'theres a man inside that bear. LOOK MUMMY HES GOT MAN EARS!!'

I say they should combine it with Eurovision and get it all over and done with in one night of the year.

The thing that annoys me with Children in Need is the celebs who give up their time to appear on the show. They are patted on the back as their good deed for the year when in fact 90% of them are only on there to peddle their new album/book/product. It makes me angry every year.

The regional bits are *always* pants. I used to drink in the local BBC bar from time to time and CIN day was always full of people waiting to see just exactly how bad the outside broadcast team would do this year.

Hazel - we're well ahead of you - see the Scottish thread below.

I'm afraid my ranting about CIN quota has been exhausted tonight - it is charidee after all. ?

    However....

The great 'selfless' acts we've seen tonight...

    Duffy - new single out

Lemar - new single out - new Album out in 10 days (only know this because CIN told me

Take That - advertising M&S. Ok, they donated 'most' of the money but publicity cheap at half the price

    Enya - new tour

    ...... I could go on.

the only genuine moment I've seen (apart from the 'real' docus) has been Our Tel on QI.

when did we get so feckin maudlin and cynical...?

We've got it on purely because we don't have a brain cell between us tonight and that bugger all else on. Laziness, anyone? It's all a bit hackneyed tonight.

Bizarrely my old school had a comedy cheque moment at the end of the kids Master Chef and I don't know why.

I HATE CiN and all charideee shows as a rule (Comic Relief etc) but have CiN on as I've had a long day (13 hours travelling to London for a meeting) and cant be arsed with anything more taxing. However I am chuffed as I have a schoolgirl crush on Alesha Dixon and she was just on....

Does Terry Wogan still get paid for presenting CIN? I remember there was a media storm over it last year.

I m happy to join the grumpy bench. i ve had a knackering day, and feel utterly shagged out. we put on CIN to see something amusing and whats on there? bloody wogan trying to do his "arent i entertaining wit me oirish charm and twinkly little oyes" bolloks. he should have been put out to grass with bruce forsyth years ago. we stood it for the first couple of "new single out" acts and that was that. we watched "no country for old men" instead

its tired, old, dull, not funny.

I was only watching it for Take That and Dr Who, which were about 6 minutes combined. However, I've just seen Ben's Jo Jingles lady on tv, the only time ever I've been excited by the regional bits.

    Comic Relief is better IMO.

Hmm, am actually really starting to dislike Tess Daly. Is it me or is she getting more affected?

Oh gawd it's sooooooo dull. The cringeworthy musical Eastenders trailer was enough to put me off. I don't donate to it either, though obviously it's a very worthy cause.

Also in 10 years of being a fundraiser for a variety of different charities I have NEVER had a grant off them. But I'm not bitter. ?

I haven't watched any of it- I took my mother shopping to The Trafford Centre and have been watching Family Guy since my return.

It used to be fun, it used to be funny. I wonder if I got old or it got ***, but somewhere along the line, I stopped enjoying it. And I am not generally curmudgeonly (great word, btw, hugely underused!)

She s definitely more affected. she used to be really natural, funny, charistmatic, and the same irl. now she s ridiculous thin, and it seems has been coached to death so she s wooden and weird. sad really. she s also looking far older than her 37 years i think, mainly due to the weight loss.

Well I've just seen the bit I wanted to see!

I do agree that it has got a bit formulaic but in the end it does raise money for a good cause. Also I don't know about you but even if someone does have a new single out and decides to go on to advertise their single it wouldn't make me buy it unless I wanted to anyway ?

I agree it's dull. However, those acts that are on just to promote their new single or whatever, well, those are what keeps people watching. That and the Dr Who bit - I am surprised they had this and Take That on so early.

And I do not want to see BBC newsreaders singing bad karaoke and doing dad dancing. Leave that to ITV and keep a small amount of gravitas, please.

What should they do to liven up the format?

    I don't think I've ever watched it.

I'll join the grumpy bench. It's made me laugh but only at how bad it is. It's like a BBC Christmas party, all trying to show how "fun" they are. It made my buttocks clench ?

I will happily support CIN, but I hate that big yellow bastard Pudsey. He really gives me the creeps, especially when you see one outside and their feet-fur's gone all wet <shudder>.

The Norn Iron CIN was and always is especially awful.

    How middle class? ?

    But oh so true.

We didn't even turn it on. R's nursery had the children make biscuits and we purchased a few to keep him happy. That's as much Pudsey bear cheering as I can muster!

Didn't watch it this year. Can't stand the rollercoaster of emotion from disappointing comedy, then sad films that make me cry, then they are repeated ad infinitum so they get boring, then I feel guilty for the boredom. Too much for a Friday night, we watched Knocked Up (which was funnier than I expected, but the wine may have helped).

Chook - I don't know what they can do tbh. Less of the slebs doing kerayzee things, more funny stuff? But that's Comic Relief. I'd say scrap it but then it does raise silly amounts of cash for charidee so we can't really do that.

I soon turned off and watched a documentary on Sky about Paul Weller. Now, "That's entertainment!"?

Maybe more 'celebs' in sporting events? Like superstars or the games etc? Or something like SCD etc. Where there's a competive element. Although it might just be me who likes things like that.
