Christian buses: this is just getting silly now

R-A, 5 February, 2009 at 19:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 23

Apologies if this has already been posted but I couldn't see anything about it.

Apparently 3 Christian groups have launched a 'counter-attack' on the atheist bus campaign, and 100 buses in London will have the slogan "There definitely is a God", amongst others, on the side.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/4523445/Atheist-bus-three-Christian-groups-launch-counter-adverts.html

a) They really don't get the whole history of why the atheist campaign came to be, do they?

b) Do they really think that people who don't believe in God are going to walk past a bus that says 'There definitely is a God!' and suddenly get converted? Really? I worry for them, frankly.

c) Can I report them to the Advertising Standards Agency for making unsubstantiated claims? ?

That was pretty much my first thought. ?

I'd rather like to sponsor a bus ad = "Who even cares if there's a god ?" Reckon I could get some funding towards that ?

I was down in London last week and the atheist buses cheered me up hugely!

I am baffled as to how they constitute an attack on Christianity though -think a few people could do with lightening up a little ? I read one article interviewing a vicar who thought that they should be reported to Advertising Standards as God could be proved to exist so the claims were "misleading". Er, OK, then, let's see the proof? Cause I rather think it's the other way round...

Personally, I'd have gone with a stronger message. Or something funnier, there's a t-shirt with a cartoon monkey holding hands with a girl saying "not ashamed to be related to a monkey" which always makes me giggle.

Me too. How crap does your faith have to be if 'There's probably no God' on a side of a bus is going to make you an atheist??

Are you aware of the background to it?

There was a widely used Christian bus advert which advertised website telling non-Christians they would spend "all eternity in torment in hell", burning in "a lake of fire".

I think the atheist campaign was a perfectly legitimate response to the above.

But this new counter-attack makes absolutely no sense.

There was a weblog/ news article I saw yesterday, which had the comment along the lines of: "It's scientitifically proven that god exists. I know because my faith tells me." I've just been looking for it, and can't find it now.

Personally, I don't give a rat's ass whether there's a gof or not. If people want to believe there is - bully for them. If people don't want to believe there's a god - bully for them. What really gets me, is the narrowmindedness from certain people that their way is the only way. (Stephen Green being a prime example of this. They guy is dillusional)

Personally, I'd say an emphatic "There definitely is a God" is much more contentious than a bet-hedging "There's probably no god". So if the latter can get reported to the ASA, the former definitely should be!

I think Stephen 'Birdshit' Green is hilarious, myself - his whining about losing a case that he himself brought... well, Oscar Wilde said something similar about the death of Little Nell. (Incidentally, was he made bankrupt and homeless? He certainly still has internet access!)

Nick: are you sure I can't persuade you with a bus advert?

I fell about laughing at David Attenburgh's comments last week about people seeing nature and it strenghthening their faith in there being a God. His comments were along the lines of that being all very well when you are looking at pretty little hummingbirds, but people never seem to say that about the species of worm that can only reproduce by burrowing through human eyeballs ? you have to love that man.

Lets start with world peace, a 90% reduction in the worlds population, and the odd miracle or two and we can talk about it.

mind you, i think nature will have the population issue covered with a suitable disease at some point in the not too distant.

    Amen to that (or not).

@the second bit: maybe, maybe not. It's perfectly feasible, but then so is nuclear war. I'm not sure a medical disaster is the most likely scenario. Everyone said it was going to be HIV 20 years ago....
