Considering a sweety buffet - any idea how much it cost?

Little Madam, 23 September, 2010 at 13:29 Posted on Planning 0 12

I am hoping to do a Sweety buffet as a suprise for H2B at our wedding reception.

We have 140 guests - I have no idea how many sweets I'd need - can anyone enlighten me?

I am trying to work out how much it will cost me.

Thanks

Are you meaning sweets as in dessert/pudding, or sweets as in Cadbury's Heroes?

    Sorry how silly of me!

I mean sweety table - I am thinking Love hearts, black jacks, fruit salads, sticky sweets..

If you can find someone with a Bookers account, you can get some very good bargains. A 3kg bag of the small tubes of Love Hearts is about £16, Bendicks mints are good (especially if they match your colour scheme) etc.

I'd say "a good handful for 75% of your guests" was adequate - so 1,000 easy. Would something like a couple of boxes of Heroes be a good way towards that 1000? Tesco and Sainsburys are doing offers on that sort of thing with halloween and Christmas coming up, plus they last of course.

Well.. we are an August wedding so I was a little weary of using choccies - am at a wedding fayre at my venue so will see how cool the aircon is. But that could save us a fortune as Xmas approaches.

I might have to look up these Bookers.? they jus closed my local Macro which isnt ideal, else I know I could go there...

1,000 sweets though - sure thats do-able. Can get 1kg boxes of sticky sweets for £9 ish.

Not a clue on quantities (it's so hard when buying online - I have no idea what 1kg of foam shrimps looks like, do you?) but to trim your costs see if your florist would hire you vases to use on the day. Vastly cheaper than buying and you don't have to try and get shot of loads of vases and jars afterwards. My florist hired us the vases for £10! She'd never seen a sweetie table before so think the novelty factor might have played a part in the price charged! Always worth asking, the worst they can say is no.

Wow all of the Vases for £10 - that is good!

Our florist is charging £5 per glass vase to hold our centrepieces so might have to find some alteratives..

I was thinking of getting some personalised labels printed, and using the jar they come in for a few.. Also using Jars that get used as Tea/Coffee jars and perhaps a few platters from a party show I used before when throwing a party for OH - so I have big ones, small ones an flat/low ones.

Also got a cupcake stand which i'm going to fill.

Ikea also do very cheap pasta jars (as I've seen on another thread) and vases and glasses if you needed more containers!

Have you got a cost-co in your area? they are wholesalers in our area and do lots of cheap sweets!

Also the website "A quater of" is very good for oldie sweets!!

    HI,

I'm having a sweetie table but i'm doing my own. Asda have some ''coffee'' jars for £1 each. Going to get a load of them and then have a trip to Macro and bulk buy the sweets. Shouldnt cost us more than about £50

Thanks I am going to try and get a costco card - I am a member of a professional body which makes me eligible I think and there is one down the road from H2Bs parents.

I saw some coffee Jars in the pound shop too thinking of it... I am going to stock up!

Thanks for the website too - gonna have a look now.

Its not something that we are doing, but you could do it instead of the favours! You can buy in the wholesalers the big "sweetie shop" jars of sweets and you could get a few of those and some paper bags and scoops, or some people on here have bought wee ikea jars and that kind of thing for the sweets. Again I would make friends with some1 who has a makro card! and go and see what the prices are. There can be great bargains on line as well, so just shop around!

As for price...I think you can make it as expensive, or as cheap as you want to!

I'm in love with the idea ever since I saw one on my photographers wedding blog.

    http://www.photographybyriddell.co.uk/WeddingsBlog.htm

You need to go down about 3 or 4 weddings to see it. Its just such a wonderful splash of colour!

My finance also likes the idea, and having seen that photo we are taking it a stage further. With him being an electrician and lighting expert in particular we are going to illuminate all the sweets by using only clear glass vases / jars / serving plates etc. and placing them all on top of individual stands with lights in them. And then by only selecting translucant sweets of different colours it should really be an amazing effect.

For the lighting we will just be using 12v low heat lighting. These cost around £6.00 each retail, though we get them for half that as trade. And in all honesty my fiance will just use them elsewhere afterwards so thats not lost money, and stands will just be MDF covered in a fireproof cloth we have loads of in stock that looks like black velvet. He's even suggested using a cycle fade dimmer so they slowly get brighter and darker. Twinkling like stars! I think he was joking when he suggested connecting them to disco lights too!

I have a selection of vases and jars in my house I will use, and I love that large martini glass in the photo and I've already seen one in John Lewis.

On top of that I'm estimating maybe £20-£30 in sweets. And we are having several wedding cakes which we will also put on some illuminated stands next to them.

I think it should be a spectualar centre peice for very little outlay.
