Contraceptive Implant

GemmaLouise1986, 11 September, 2010 at 16:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

Hi ladies. Does anyone have the contraceptive implant? I am thinking of having one as I am prone (when busy at work) to forget to take my pill. Can I ask how it affects everyone periods? My periods are very very light on the pill which I like but I've heard some people have a continuous period for the first few months or have really irregular periods. I was just wondering what everyone's experience was?

I've had one in since May. My situation is slightly different because I'm breastfeeding but I've only had one period, about 2 weeks after it went in. There has been nothing since. The AF I did have was OK, not light as prior to pregnancy but not heavy either.

I'm moody and down at times and have no sex drive but all those could be put down to breastfeeding, up several times a night and having a baby, a 5yr old and a house to look after, more or less single handedly.

I had an implant and i think they are amazing little things. They look like a little lolli pop stick.

I think everyones body is totally different and if you get on ok with the pill then its not a huge shock to the system. Its just a progesterone hormone that is released.. (its the same hormone in the implant as the contraceptive injection)

Some of the side effects can be awful i.e. mood swings, head aches, increased appetite causing the weight gain if you cant control your eating but not everyone gets those!

Everyone bleads differently, my periods were regular every 28 days and were quite light. My best friend has had hers in for over a year and she doesnt have periods at all but another one of my friends has had hers in for 3 months and she bleads constantly Smiley sad

I would definately try it, if you dont get on with it they will take it out again.

If you are forgetful and you are worried about implant you could also consider the coil or the injection or contraceptive patch. Everything has side effects, some things suit some people better than others a friend of mine gets on fine with the coil but my sister had bad stomach cramps for the first 3 months.

Good luck with what ever you decide! Oh the complicated world of contraception!!! x

Oddly, when I went to see a Health guru (all natural remedies n stuff) she took a sample of my hair and her wee machine thing squealed at every brand of pill ive ever taken (she keeps a large range in stock for testing) and so it told us that my body does not like my pill at all.....suggested I get off it asap......

the docs wanted to let me try something else other than my pill, given my age but I am happy to stick with the pill. Dont want the coil (shudder) and dont fancy the implants....... just wish you could administer the injection urself though coz getting appts to get it is the pain.....

think im staying on the pill till xmas....eeeek.....then see what happens..

I've got one. Get on fine with it, have virtually no periods - I can't remember the last one and it was very light. Only thing is I think it does adversely affect my mood but I love the lack of periods so putting up with it

I'm on my second and to be honest I can't wait to get rid of it, although I have no idea what I'll use to replace it, I might end up going with another one as the lesser of all the evils.

First one I got in about 5 years ago: Bled pretty much constantly for about 3 months, horrific mood swings. Then no bleeds for 6 months and the mood swings settled down. After that things settled into a more reasonable routine - periods were longer but lighter than without the implant (I had really bad periods before the implant, to the point where I was almost guaranteed to faint at least once a month). Thought it was a godsend - no period pain, much lighter, fairly regular and no worrying about whether I'd remembered to take anything or if the condom had failed.

Second one I got in has frankly been a royal pain and I cannot understand why since it's the same damn hormone in it. for the first year periods were erratic, I'd have one then another after a week off, then I'd bleed for three weeks then nothing for about 8 then back to spotting for a fortnight. Hellish. Now it seems to have settled into a routine but not one I'm happy with <TMI warning> At the moment for about 10 days before I'm 'due' my boobs become agonisingly painful, to the point that I can't drive over speed bumps without wincing. I also get horrendously broody and tearful. When period actually arrives it'll last 7-10 days, pretty normal stuff, not much pain just a very little discomfort. I'll then be absolutely fine for about 6-7 days then I start spotting old dark, black clots for about a week. It's not nice and seriously interferes with the whole sex life thing.

I don't mean to sound negative about it and it has absolutely eliminated the dead panic of being a couple of days late, which is great, but you should be aware before you go to get one in that people's experiences vary greatly on it - mine has even varied between two different implants. It might be worth asking to go on the mini pill for a bit before you decide since that's effectively the same hormone.

Oh my god I absolutely love mine. It has been the best thing I have ever done. I have had mine in for a year and a half.

I used to be a b*tch for 3 weeks out of a month - my periods were heavy and all over the place.

Now its just light spotting and my H2B can hardly tell when Aunt Flo is about to visit.

    Give it a go!!

Hmmmm so mixed reviews. I think after the wedding I might give it a go and see how I get on with it.

    Hi,

I've had the implant for 4 years (had it changed after 3 as thats when they run out). For the first few months Aunty Flo wasnt visiting so much but after that she settled down and is now like clockwork. I dont get as many pains either with it.

Everyones body is different and will react differently to it.
