contraceptive implant and weight gain??

lil_kel, 15 July, 2010 at 11:10 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 2

Hi everyone,

im half way through me 2nd implant and im due to have it taken out later on this afternoon after gaining almost 4 stone over 4 years.

I was just wondering if anyone else is having or has had any weight problems with the implant?

I refuse to buy my dress in a size bigger than a 12 and am sure that this is the cause of the gain as my lifestyle/eating habbits havnt changed since i had the first one put in.

any advice would be fab!

I'm sure it was part of the cause to my weight gain - Although I'm pretty sure there's a lot of hormone contraceptions that can have that effect. - My GP has given me cerazette now as she says its not a combination pill, so shouldn't have the effect the injection/implant/other pills did. I've only been on it for 3 cycles so as yet do real length of time to compare it over.

I did start putting on weight when I got my first implant but I also changed job from an active one to a desk job at around the same time so I don't really think it's connected in my case. Think most hormone contraceptives warn that weight gain can be a side effect but only ever had the implant so I can't compare. That said, a diet and excercise change at the start of 2009 means that I'm now slimmer than I was when I got the first one in 5 years ago but there's a teeny bit of me hopes it is connected and that when I get the implant out next year the weight wil drop off and I'll be a size 10! (wishful thinking icon).

4 stone in 4 years seems a lot if you haven't changed lifestyle or diet though so it could well be linked for you. Hope you get some answers.

Well I can only speak from knowing others but ... my fiance uses the pill, apologies for not knowing what one, but she hasn't gained any weight from it. One of my friends had the implant however and has gained weight .. I can't vouch for her lifestyle but the weight gain did start the moment she started. I suggest talking to your GP about it. From friends and family the pill doesn't seem to cause weight gain, at least, not so much that it is noticeable and can't be explained away on the few extra cakes at lunch.
